S/O southern blondes, blondes in general

Anonymous
Whats the deal with the percentage of blondes in the south anyway? Is it all that sunshine?
To clarify, my family is southern so I am very fond of/mystified by the south however, I visited USC, it was like being at a blonde convention, like it was part of the application process! All of my male southern family members have blonde spouses.
Plus it seems like blondes overall prefer to hang with mostly blondes, is this the case? They always seem to be in groups, do blindness prefer blondes?

Have you ever been to Utah? One summer we were there for a ball tourney, and Sunday was our day off so we visited Salt Lake City. Almost every yard was full of blondes ~ boys, girls, men & women!

As a Southern blonde (naturally as a kid, dye now) I have to say the reason there are a lot of blondes in the South is because women down there just put a lot of importance on looks. It's a fact. We take a lot of pride in being well made up and well dressed and looking put together. For a lot of women, that means coloring your hair. I'm speaking in huge generalities here of course, but in the South, women cover their grays, and if their blonde hair darkens to that nasty dishwater brown that natural blondes tend to get as they get older, they're going to color it. And blonde just goes SO well with Lilly shifts.

Are you a blonde? Read it again and think about what you'd say to someone who wrote that.

My naturally blonde hair darkened into dishwater blonde/brown. I freaking love it, and get genuine "No! Don't color your hair!" comments on it. Dyeing is for the birds.

Seriously. This is idiotic. I'm blonde and NO I don't hang out with only blond people. That's kind of offensive. Do you hang out with people who don't share your exact hair/skin/eye color?!

OP, this is the answer to your question, and no, I'm not the PP. Southern women put a LOT of effort into their appearances. Also, there are very few blondes in DC - probably why it looks like there are so many when you head down south.

Funny. You just described me to a T. Bottle blonde, sitting at work, in her Lilly shift. Raised south of here.

THe other thing to keep in mind about the South is the original demographic--lots of Nordic/English immigrants. Not too many Greek/Italian/etc. So that kept the lighter haired population higher, along with the brisk sales of L'Oreal 9N (that's Natural Blonde, ya'll!)

All of my southern friends laugh (and tsk tsk) when they see how little women here care about their appearances.

Amen. So many frumps. There may be trash in the south, but they still put in effort to look trashy. Women here just don't give a shiiiiiiiit.

This is going to sound mean but I don't mean it that way. It's just how different we are. But my friends and I don't really get the highly artificial look of nails, make-up, and hair color that many women in the South have.

Can't explain it. It just is. My mother (I'm the Southern blonde PP) wore false eyelashes to work every day for YEARS. Got a manicure once a week. She took me to get my eyebrows waxed for the first time when I was 13. To this day, I cannot leave the house with no makeup on. I don't lounge around in sweatpants. If that's the way you're raised, that's what you grow up thinking is normal. And all our moms raised us that way! It's just as weird to me to imagine going out in public with no makeup, hair a mess, wearing ratty old sweatpants as it is for you to imagine doing all this, I'm sure.

No way dear. My mom was so high maintenance I swore I would not do that to my kids! It corrupts them, takes time away from them and teaches them the wrong priorities. Appearances do not come before everything else.

It's not the makeup (I wear make up)
It's not the manicure (I regularly get manicures, but natural/clear polish/buff)
It's not the clothes (I think I'm somewhat presentable)
It's not dyeing the hair (I do too)

It's how MUCH of it there is. Inch long blood-red nails, hair so blonde it's almost white, extremely thick make-up. Maybe you aren't like this, but I work with several women (young women) who are.
