I've always wrapped mine well (to avoid their absorbing odors) and kept them in the fridge.

I watched Rachel Ray for a while and she suggested storing all nuts in the freezer. "Nuts have oil and oil can spoil" was her quote I think. I thought it was odd, but it really doesn't take long to thaw them out at all. I use a bunch of different freezer bags and label them.
