AlexNews.Org is carrying a report that something like 150 kids in this year's class got into the good VA publics, including over 60 among UVA, WM, VT, and this excludes NoVa/GM. This looks pretty terrific -- it's a plurality of the non-votech TC student body. Any TC parents have a confirm, and/or additional reports?

http://www.alexandrianews.org/2012/06/t-c-williams-seniors-are-going-places/ Says 150 are going to NoVa and about 41 to U.VA, VT and W&M. TC had 628 graduating seniors. |
| That's pretty good for a local public. And I've heard roughly 10 or so go to the ivies every year. |
| I went to TC and went to Tech (good grades but lazy teen who didn't then bother with the essays- I should have gotten into UVA - but did for grad school) , my sister- UVA but also got multiple scholarships for out of state, brother -West Point and multiple scholarships..(he wanted to go). |
| what is TC? |
T.C. Williams High School http://www.acps.k12.va.us/tcw/ |
Considering how many kids come from low-income families, the high number going to NoVa I suspect is in part due to that. |
| BTW, as far as "excluding" GM goes, George Mason has got a really good reputation that seems to increase every year. It's not really the commuter/safety school it used to be. |
lousy dorms though from what I hear.
|
| The new dorms are very nice! Honors dorms are very nice! Unfortunately they are still using "older" dorms -- not so nice! |

My reaction is that it's not "terrific," but it's not horrible, either. There are quite a few schools in NoVa that have smaller graduating classes, and fewer dropouts along the way, who send more kids to the top public universities in Virginia than TC. The report seems to be consistent with the idea that motivated students there can do well. It doesn't suggest they have an advantage on similar students at other area schools.
If TC did, in fact, send 10 graduates to Ivy League schools, however, that would stand out. It would be rare for any high school in Arlington, Fairfax or Loudoun, which (unlike TC) allow their students to attend TJHSST, to send 10 seniors to the Ivy League. |
Yep - lower admission rate that Virginia Tech now, and the academic profile of the admitted students is similar to JMU. Main difference I can see is that GMU gets more bright children of immigrants who either can't afford room and board or who want their kids to stay in the area. |
Agree. I don't think TC students have an "edge" but it doesn't look like their college chances suffer, either. On the other end of the issue, it will be interesting to see what the numbers are for the dropout rate this year, and see if they've made any improvement along that line. And will be really, really interesting to see if the experiment with the satellite campus next year translates into fewer dropouts. |

20 to UVA, 11 to VT, 10 to WM.
I only see one Ivy in the list: Columbia U. One to Miami University in Ohio, once dubbed one of the "Public Ivies." Agree with pp's. It gets a shrug. It's certainly not "terrific." |
| Do other local high schools publish those stats? I would love to see the list for our zoned high school. |
