Brown Discharge

Anonymous
Sorry if this is TMI, but I am 8 weeks pregnant and today have had some brown discharge. Anybody else experience this? Something to be concerned about or no big deal? Thanks from one very anxious mom-to-be (hopefully!).

I had some brownish discharge and was told by my MW that it was okay. If it was bright red, they would be concerned. However, I suggest you give a call to your doctor's office to see what they think. That's what they are there for!

I had this with both of my pregnancies. Around the time you would get your period? It is probably old blood that stops after the second month (of what would havebeen your second period) I called the dr and went in too because I was nervous and they tested and it was fine.

I had a lot of bleeding and brown discharge around 8w... fwiw, my doctor did not distinguish at all based on color - said either one is a reason for concern BUT also stressed that tons and tons of women (I forget the stats, maybe 1/4 or 1/3 of all pregnant women?) experience this kind of spotting/bleeding during early pregnancy and have zero complications. Read the archives (search for spotting or bleeding) and you'll see multiple women posting on this just in the past few months. I know because one PP was me and now halfway thru the pregnancy all is fine. Try not to worry, but definitely keep your doctor posted.

I had brown spotting three times in my first trimester. It stopped once I started my second trimester and the baby is perfectly healthy! It was never very heavy, I would just see it on the toilet paper. This can be common, and it shouldn't cause you too much alarm. I would call your doctor and s/he will probably bring you in for a quick ultrasound to ease your mind and verify that everything is okay. I know how worrisome it can be - but it should be over soon.

I also had the brown discharge in my first trimester. I actually had it off and on until 10 weeks. I was really worried about it, but my doctor wasn't. She said that it was remnants of implantation spotting (which I also had). She said as the embryo keeps burrowing in it can release little bits of blood and by the time they come out they're brown.

Double check with your doc, but mine wasn't the least bit concerned. Good luck!

to put it in kindergarten terms: brown OK, red BAD!!

Not to scare you, but you may want to make an appointment. I had very slight brown discharge, as well as a gradual decrease in nausea and just a feeling that things were *different*. I went in for an sonogram - saw the heartbeat, but baby was measuring small (bad sign). Later that afternoon, discharge increased and became more pink. That night, I knew I was miscarrying and by the next day, the doctor confirmed it with a second ultrasound.

I really, really hope all is well with you. Many of my friends have had discharge with no problem. I will say that I truly felt and knew in my heart things were different. I would want to get a sonogram just to make sure all is well.

Sending good thoughts your way!

I've had it go both ways.

With the m/c-I started spotting at 5 weeks. A day later it was red and an u/s confirmed that the pregnancy wasn't viable.

With my son-I spotted during week five-all week. I had my son 9 months later.

I would definitely have an u/s. It could nothing or it could be something.

OP here - thanks to all who replied. I did call my doctor and had an ultrasound - everything looks to be okay, although they have no explanation for the spotting. For anybody else who may be in this situation, my doctor said it was important that I called because I am Rh negative and needed to get the rhogam shot. So, particularly if you're Rh negative, call the doctor!
