Do you commute to DC schools from Silver Spring?

OK, DH and I are trying to figure our our lives. We currently live in SS, but plan to move to NW DC within a few years (we're trying to save a downpayment, and the equity in our current house has been lost in the last year).

So, we should be able to move in 2 years, when our daughter will be in 1st grade. Since K is an entry year but 1 isn't we're considering applying to DC privates. But we're afraid if the economy turns even worse we might get stuck in SS-- especially with paying private school tuition.

Do folks commute from SS to DC private schools? which schools are a good commute (we work on K street & Penn quarter). Alternately, has anyone in the history of time been accepted to DC private schools in grades 3 or 4 from a Silver Spring public school (I know it happens from Somerset, Janney, Mann etc), but what about East MoCo schools?

why move into DC, where you know for a fact you are planning to pay private?
MOCO has wonderful magnet schools....

Lowell is a super easy commute from Silver Spring and actually has lots of SS kids there. I do the commute downtown from there and it is an easy one straight downtown. If you end up moving to NW DC, it is easy to go across Rock Creek Park in the morning to get to Lowell (I do it from Cleveland Park and it takes about 13 minutes). Unfortunately, K is not a great entry year at Lowell but there are sometimes a few spots.

OP here- to answer above question, we're moving into DC to shorten commute and live a more urban lifestyle.

Well, of course. I know kids in SS and Takoma Park who entered Maret, Sheridan, Lowell, etc. at grade 3 or 4. I also know kids who entered at the first entry point into DC private schools, including those listed above. The commutes are not really an issue. I'm not sure what your questions or concerns are. If your child's scores, grades, recommendations and other material fit the profile, she is no less likely to get into a good DC private school from SS than from a DC public school. But of course if you want the best possible chance of getting in, you will probably want to apply at the first available entry point.

OP here- I was advised by a well known admissions insider that getting in from public in 3 or 4 is much much easier if it is from one of the well known elementaries (Bethesda or NW). I guess for the same reason it's easier from NCRC.
