How old where you when you bought a house here?

I am hoping this post will cheer me up after my brother and his fiance (26 and 21) just bought a gorgeous house in our home state (of course it was only 120K).

So, how old were you when you bought a house here?

How many years into your career were you?

When I lived in Michigan just out of undergrad, I toyed with the idea of buying something. It would have been about 60K for a started home in a 'hip' area. Decided against it as I did not want to be tied down to a house and all that it required for as a single woman in my early 20s.

10 years late, I purchased my 1st property in DC. A small row house. It was the right time for me.

Note: Being engaged at 21 was the last thing I wanted. I do not care how beautiful the house is - it would not have been my dream.

My dad helped me buy a small condo when I was 26. I got married a couple years later, and DH and I saved up and bought a SF house when I was 29. Everyone thought it was too big for us, but 12 years later we are still in the same place and it is full of kids.

i was 24 when i bought my first house (for $62K) in centreville. It was a small townhouse. That was over 20 years ago and i got a great VHDA interest rate of 10.5%! I've now lived in DC since 1996 buying when Marion Barry was mayor for life. If you want to do well in real estate you have to do the opposite of what CW says.

24 during the boom and I regret it

OP - None of you are helping with my feelings of inadequacy ha ha. I am 29 and DH is 33. Granted, I am not sure what I could find for under 200K

We just bought our first house at 31 for $460K in Silver Spring. We rented downtown (Dupont and Georgetown) until then. We almost bought a condo in G-town during the boom, but backed out at the last minute - best move we ever made.

I moved here at 22, and at ramen noodles, didn't go out, saved like crazy, did very well at work and got a bunch of promotions. I bought a townhouse at 26 when I was making $80K. I sold it 9 years, a marriage and three kids later, and we've just bought our first SFH.

we were 26 when we bought a small 2 BR TH in Reston for $238K in 2003. We did a 80/15/5 mortgage, using mostly wedding gifts to put down the 5% required (we had gotten married earlier that year).

we moved up to our SFH in Chantilly area last year (we were 34) for $455K, using the profit from selling our TH as a 10% downpayment (we were able to use a VA Loan) AND money to renovate the entire first level. We were incredibly lucky to have been able to sell for almost $100K more than we owed - I know a lot of people are not in that boat right now. Had we not been able to sell for a profit, we'd never be able to save enough to buy up.
