If you cancelled cable and use Roku- who do you use for internet?

Anonymous
We are thinking about cancelling our cable and just using our Roku. I am wondering who others use for internet and if the speed is fast enough for streaming the shows on Roku. I have started pricing internet only plans, but it sounds like when you cancel your cable they downgrade you and give you a slower speed internet (comcast is 12 /2). Thanks for any help and if location matters we are in DC.

Comcast offers different prices of different speeds. You need fairly high speed to be able to use Roku so just tell that you plan to stream video and they'll tell you the minimum speed. It will still cost you about $60/month.

We have Fios and don't have trouble with speed. Have never had cable.

8:57- When you say you don't have cable you mean you only have internet and no TV?

I'm not 8:57 but we have FIOS and no TV (have never had cable). We watch TV on the computer. I don't know if there is a difference between having had cable and downgrading versus never having had it, but our speed is good.

Anyone use Roku with any other internet provider?

We use with plain old Verizon (no fios here yet) and it works great.

Yes, Comcast for years. Works just fine. About $60-70/month just for internet.

Is the Roku worth it or are there additional charges for watching stuff?

Roku is just a device that facilitates streaming. The content is separate. There are some that come pre-loaded and are free, but for TV shows, movies, etc. you'll probably want Hulu+, Netflix, and or Amazon Prime. Each work out to about $8/mo.

We use Verizon DSL. We use a Roku box, plus we stream Netflix through our Wii and we have VoIP. I do not recommend this approach, as we have noticeable issues with our phone. We will probably eventually switch to FIOS, but it will hurt to give up the cost savings.

I have Comcast it works fine without disclosing that you are cancelling so you can stream content. I have net + phone and the price fluctuates.

I use Verizon DSL and a Lenovo nettop (tiny hard drive computer) hooked up to my TV, along with a little Lenovo wireless mouse remote. You don't have to pay for hulu and you can stream from any site, check email, stream music (Pandora, Spotify etc), whatever.

We cut the cord with Comcast and love not having cable. We're in Capitol Hill, and use DC Access for internet. We don't stream much though.

In fact, as I think through my kids' friends, I only know a few who still have cable, if they ever had it. My kids (5 and 9) don't miss it or ask about it. Not only has it freed up time, we have no more negative negotiations about what/how much TV to watch.
