Howard University Middle School of Mathematics and Science (MS)²

On paper, this looks like a reasonable middle school option in a city with a dearth of them -- any idea why it doesn't get more play on these boards? I mean, why are there a bajillion postings about a school that doesn't yet exist (Basis) and so few postings about a seemingly similar school (MS2) with an actual track record?

It is Howard University affiliated and there are people who think that is just a step above UDC. Consider this, Banneker is located across the street from Howard and SWW is located on the campus of George Washington and there's more credence to one than another. You can guess which one. Those who have graduated from HUMS and are attending DCPS schools are doing extremely well.

Yes--Howard University becomes a filter..... and the community likes it that way.

Well said.

Cleveland ES is also across from Howard and has had consistently good (for DCPS) math scores and a bilingual program and is rarely mentioned on DCUM. Hmmm...

Hey, let's keep those schools our little secret. Once others find out about it, all bets are off. Hush, will you let it be. As quiet as it kept, some of our best and brightest former DCPS personnel have landed at HUMS. Shhhhhh!

Zero white kids. Duh.

And this is such a wrong perception, it's really shameful.

Howard University a step above UDC? You have no clue. You should do a little research on Howard University!

@7:36, my sentiments exactly. Many people are clueless about Howard and that's okay. The exposure alone our children get at the middle school age to Howard University is worth twice as much as those students who are at SWW on George Washington's campus.

Hush. This will help ALL of our HBCU's. Funny, that's another item that upsets white people.

How competitive is it to get into the charter school. My family is very interested. Do they get a ton of applicants?

I know some people on their board and it is a really impressive list. We would definitely have considered the school if we had known about it at the time. With that said, I am happy to state that my son will be attending Banneker in the fall.

Hey, when you have two good choices then you can't go wrong.

Please, let us change the subject about HUMS it has been the best kept secret in DC. Move on there's nothing going on here...false alarm.

As a Howard Alum, I'm glad this thread popped up. I had totally forgotten about their middle school. Thank you.
