What is the reputation of Episcopal High in Alexandria?

Trying to decide if we want to stay in Alexandria or move.

It's a boarding school, so if you're thinking you will send your kid there to live, your question is moot.

I would still be interested in hearing the reputation of the school. Many of my friends from college and grad school attended boarding school.

I think it is very good, but I think that it's not usually discussed since it is, in fact, a boarding school, so a different category alltogether.

Harvard had a lot of kids from boarding school. When I was in school, I thought I would want to send my kids to a school like Andover. After my kids were born, I can't imagine sending them away sooner than I have to. Episcopal could be a decent compromise.

OP you will have better luck on the boarding school portion of college confidential. While Episcopal draws some students from the area it draws a lot from outside the area so the parents aren't as likley to be on DCUM. My DD's school played them in a lot of sports and they do recruit heavily for some sports. The grounds are nice and the sports complex is super nice. I think the academics are good although I sense that they have a pretty wide range of abilities there. But I could be wrong about that.

Heavy, heavy, massive sports school. Very clubby, especially the boys. Academically very well regarded. Very well-endowed, financially stable.

Episcopal is a good, solid school with a Southern flavor and focus. Excellent faculty, strong sports (they have increased their recruiting dramatically in the past decade). Great facilities. Lots of kids looking to go to UVA, UNC; it is not as rigorous or with as academically talented a cohort as the good area day schools or the "St. Grottlesex" line of boarding schools (for example, you won't see a lot of National Merit Semifinalists coming out of Episcopal).

Just curious. Since you are local, did you look into day schools in town (St. Stephens St. Agnes, Bishop Ireton, etc.) and find them lacking? As long as your thinking Private, why would you need to move? You could stay and easily do one of the DC privates as well.

My oldest child is only 3 years old. We are looking into our public and private options. From the research I have done, I am not all that impressed with our options in the area. The better private schools seem to be clustered in DC, McLean and Bethesda.

You've got a little time before you need to worry about HS then. I would move where you want and if you find that episcopal is a good fit for your child in 11 years it is always an option since it is not a neighborhood school.

I have a friend that went there and he loved it enough that he plans to send his kids. The only thing he said to me was that he believed it prepared him for college better than any other HS could for him. I did not drill him on what that meant but I gathered it meant being away and learning to do his work without help and being independent. He is super nice guy, very interesting and successful in his profession.

I have been there for a sports event and it is a beautiful campus.

A lot of Alexandrians perform this same analysis and leave. ACPS is about the worst school system outside PG County, and the privates don't really offer that great an alternative.

Our families have attended THE High School for over 150 years. It educates the whole person. Academics, honor, sports, etc. We plan to pay for our grandchildren to attend. St. Grottlesex types may look down on Southern schools such as EHS but our families have competed with their types successfully for years. AND we have excellent manners.

Yes, your self-effacing and humble post indicates truly "excellent manners."
