| We're debating me becoming a SAHM. I'm aware of the financial issues that could come up if DH ever wanted to leave (we're stable so this is not really my fear). We have financial contingency plans for the mortgage/income if something should happen to him. What about health insurance post Cobra? What do people do? |
| Private insurance/ Individual policy not thru an employer. |
| Go back to work and get benefits through the new job. |
+1 |
| Unfortunately I can answer this from experience. My husband's organization was very generous in paying for Cobra for 6 months following his death. When that time was up, I purchased a high-deductible plan that offers free well visits through United/Golden Rule for myself and the kids. There are several options available, you can go through on United's website and adjust the copay, deductible, and percentages to come up with a plan that works for your needs. I plan to go back to work FT in the 2013-2014 academic year and obtain coverage through my job |

This is a legitimate and common concern for those who truly work for themselves, OP. It is not all money trees! 13:26 had some great information. GL. |
If this is your plan in this economy, after you've been out of the workforce for several years, then you need to think again. |
Nothing to add, but I'm sorry for your loss. |

Pay for an individual / family plan with the shit ton of life insurance we have on DH. In the longer term I assume I'd go back to work in the public sector where benefits are usually pretty good.
Lots of people don't have health insurance through their jobs, OP. |
| His health insurance will still cover me (as long as I do not remarry) and the kids, if he dies. He is active duty military. |
| I would think this wouldn't even be on the second page of the things I'd be worried about under this scenario. |
What if anyone has developed a "pre-existing" condition? |
Well, then you're screwed, unless Obamacare stays in place. |
Then you're either really lucky, or really young. |
Or really delusional. Thinking parents plan for the unthinkable. |
