I think mine was pretty high, but my blood work all generated reassuring odds in my first round of testing (I guess that's the triple screen with NT). My quad screen also came back with good odds, although not quite as good as the 12 week triple screen. But still good enough for me to decline an amnio and almost 3x better than my age-related risk. The only reason I might possibly do an amnio at this point is my NT measurement at 12 weeks.
Without revealing my exact NT measurement, I'd love to hear people's honest views as to what they think is high enough to justify further testing even though everything else looks great. Thank you in advance. |
I believe that they don't want to see a measurement over 3 mm. But it also varies according to when exactly the measurement was taken (in terms of gestation); the risk calculations depend on the timing of the test. "An NT measurement of up to 2.0mm is normal at about 11 weeks, and up to about 2.8mm by 13 weeks and 6 days. This is because the NT normally grows in proportion to the growth of the baby." (from an online source)
The quad screen isn't as reliable as the NT/triple screen, so if your NT triple screen was very good (which I define as much lower risk than your age risk), I probably wouldn't test further. That said, I had an amnio with my 2nd child after having a different experience -- great NT measurement but then DS odds that were essentially the same as my age risk, meaning that something in my blood tests was a little off. I really wasn't terribly concerned, but I'm someone who always likes to have more information, so I decided to go for the amnio. Everything was normal, and I have no regrets about doing it. So it's really about your threshold for uncertainty. Good luck, whatever course you choose. |
I had an NT Scan at 12 weeks and the baby measured 1.5 mm. The tech told me that was in the 50th percentile, which reassured me. Haven't gotten my bloodwork back, though. |
My son's NT measurement was 2.5mm at 11 1/2 weeks, and this was considered "high normal". I had a CVS as the risk for DS was made higher than my age related risk. Our results came back normal. |
My son had a NT of 3mm at 11 weeks. It was considered high-but we fortunate that we were having a CVS moments after the NT. We were really freaked out!
2 days later we found out our son had 46 chromosomes. I read conflicting info while waiting for the CVS results-2.5 was considered high but then other info said 3mm was high. He's 19 months-beautiful, strong and healthy! |
Mine was 2.9 at 11.5 weeks, and the doctor told me I was far outside the normal range. My blood work also came back abnormal and they put my risk factor for Down Syndrome at 1:15. I had the CVS and everything is fine (thankfully!). Try not to let the measurement stress you out too much. It's not a diagnosis and not a guarantee that anything is wrong. I've heard from a lot of people that they were given high risk ratings after the NT scan, only to have totally normal CVS or amnio results. If I have another baby, I don't think I'll do the NT. Too much stress. |
i heard that they're looking for anything over 3. mine was 1.2 and she said it was fine. |
