School Supplies at Private Schools

Anonymous
The Washington Post had a funny piece this past week about why it is that we parents must supply the classroom each year with a brand new bunch of Fiskars scissors. What happened to the ones used last year? Did they all go dull? Get lost? It's a humorous question, but honestly, one I wouldn't mind being answered!

At the risk of sounding totally lazy (am putting on my flame retardant suit right now), I do have to wonder why each family attending a private school needs to go out and purchase school supplies (pencils, scissors, crayons, markers). It's not that I'm incapable or unwilling to do so, but it just seems so INEFFICIENT to have so many people drive to the store when one administrative staff person could go and get exactly the items that are wished for by the teachers. PLUS, when one is paying $20K plus tuition, couldn't the price of a pack of pencils be included??? The tuition is already so high anyway ... I wouldn't mind if they raised it $15 more a year and just provided the pencils and glue. It's a petty complaint, I know.

So where DO all those Fiskars go????

I was mildly shocked and amused that some private schools require parents to buy school supplies. We are going to a public school for the first time (our previous private school supplied everything) and had a fun time shopping for back to school supplies (and spent less than $50 for everything. DC asked why we are buying all the stuff and I told him that it was because public schools don't have the funds to provide everything. For the high tuition that privates charge, it certainly would be more efficient to just lump the shopping together!

Our school has not requested anything but a change of clothes and a rest mat.

OP here. Finding out that other private schools do NOT require running around buying pencils, glue and so forth moves me from mildly annoyed to officially annoyed!!! Time to address the issue with our school, I'd say.

Well, I was pretty pissed that after shelling out $28K, I still had to buy textbooks! And they're expensive!
