The legislature may end up reverting the makeup days...

I’m glad the union relented on that. I wonder why they haven’t let parents know yet?

I just saw the email too. Sounds like they still don't know the exact last day, but are hoping not to go so late into June.

So April 15th will definitely be a school day and April 6th definitely will not? Or was it ambiguous on the 6th? Can someone share the text?

April 6 will NOT be a school day. April 15 will be a half day. Further communication will be coming before Spring Break.

Good question.

MCPS just enjoys the chaos and making everyone's scheduling difficult. Because they're too stupid/lazy to put in an appropriate number of days in the school calendar like every other school district in Maryland that gets snow.

Yes, we know, but has anyone heard anything from our state senators or anyone else knowledgeable regarding the outlook and timing for this in the Senate?

It is not scheduled for a hearing for another two weeks, so will not be resolved anytime soon: https://legiscan.com/MD/bill/HB1084/2026

Does anyone know if this timeline means the Senate is likely intentionally slow-walking it and it's not going to pass? Or would they just not have a hearing at all if they wanted to kill it?

I sure hope that's the case. MCPS should not be let off the hook for its terrible planning.

Yes, let's punish all the people affected by this that had absolutely nothing to do with it,just to stick it to MCPS! Are you 10 years old?

Holding school days is "punishment"?

+1 What a rotten attitude about the value of school. I want my kids to makeup the 5 days they lost due to snow. Ideally MCPS would learn from the last two years in which it idiotically only put 1 snow day in the calendar, and be more like other Maryland districts that included 3-4 snow days.

Why would they do that? This outcome is great for MCPS staff. They get an extra week of paid vacation, and central office can wring their hands helplessly and say who could have predicted that we would have more than 1 snow day while our kids get shortchanged days of instruction (again). Meanwhile 2/3 of MCPS kids can't do math at grade level, and 1/2 can't read at grade level.

3 -5 days of school isn't going to fix the reading and math issues. Its far more complicated than that. Many teachers were working.

Losing 5 days of instructional time certainly doesn't help student outcomes. We could be like Massachusetts and schedule 185 school days assuming that some will be lost to weather/other emergencies. Instead, MCPS schedules 180 and does a surprised Pikachu face when it snows/sleets, and MCPS loves to close if there is an inch of ice on the ground anywhere in MoCo.

I just need to know what it means for last day of school

Why don’t they let parents know now that there will be school on the 15th? It sounds like they are still hoping for a state bailout and if that happens they will keep it as a non instructional day.

Keeping schools open an extra week will cost $$$. Budget is already tight

That’s in MCPS. They should have incorporated more snow days into the calendar like they used to, and used the spring contingency days. And regardless, with a $3.4+B budget, this is going to be rounding error for them.
They could have NOT had a transition day and they will ACTUALLY use April 15 which nobody will be upset about but there is no more desirable room to add snow days. Summer already was planned to start almost week later then last year due to various holidays. Between holidays, grading days and bad weather there isn't enough room for 180 days with a full summer. Maryland schools already lack adequate break time during the school year, shortening that even more or shortening summer is awful! As long as they meet for enough hours which is more than most states require they will be fine. There is no shortchanging that is worse than any other state!

They didn't pick April 6 because apparently the costs of opening on that day and having to pay holiday overtime to hourly employees would be around $10 million. I would have preferred using April 6 and April 15 as opposed to extra days in June but given that explanation I can understand why they did not do so. That's a lot of money.

No. It was very confusingly written. It says that they added in 4/15 to avoid having to extend the school year the way they had, and then had a section bolded titled impact on end of school year, but then it didn't convey any information about the last day. I don't know what they pay their comms people, but they are not good.

Their comms people were clear. The current state of MCPS makes a day in school cruel and unusual punishment, requiring the state to provide "relief" from such injustices.

April 6th isn't a holiday.
