It depends on the kid you have. A top kid is a top kid anywhere. No need to go private. But the average big 5 kid has better chances of attending a top 20. A BCC or Whitman or Langley or McLean kid probably belongs to the same demographics as a big 5 kid. Able to pay and get the Same level of support and tutoring. |
University of Chicago - I believe they are ED0. Not to diminish their talents - but it is not the same. |
This post is spot on. As a parent of kids at a private school who thinks itโs been a good investmentโฆ if I were sending them there for college admissions purposes, that would have been an extremely poor way to spend our hard earned money. If private schools were transparent about this, I feel like there would be a good deal less frustration from parents, especially those who enroll in high school. It is not a competitive advantage in our area for college admissions purposes to go to a private school, the data these past few years bear that out. There are other great reasons to send your child to one - and it is very child and situation specific. But if youโre shelling out $$ looking for assurances that your child will end up at an Ivy League school, please go in eyes wide open. That is not how it goes anymore. |
| People posting how well Sidwell did in this ED round. BCC has done even better! Unless your child needs permanent hand-holding, there is no value in private schools. |
There are at least 16-20 students at my kids' public HS that were admitted to top universities. It's impossible to know which school/s have done "better". |
Walls so far has a Harvard, 2 Princetons, 2 Dartmouths, a Johns Hopkins, etc. A public school with 150 kids, real racial and economic diversity and an average SAT scores below 1300. VERY impressive. I'd take that over a Sidwell any day of the week. |
My BCC grad is now at a top 10, but if I could do it over again, I would have sent her to private. And if she had been at a private, she likely wouldn't be at a top 10 school right now. MCPS grade inflation is what got her in to her current school, which is great but I would have preferred her to get a better education. |
UChicago is a top 5 university, whether you like it or not. Cope harder. |
BCC only wishes. Yโall are going to be very irritated when you see the next batch of Sidwell postings. Stay mad and stay tuned. ๐ |
Out of 125 students, Sidwell has a Harvard, a Yale, 3 Columbia, 3 Cornell, 3 UChicago, 2 Princeton, 2 Penn, 2 Dartmouth, and 2 Duke. Iโd take that (and Sidwellโs superior education and campus) over Walls any day. Actually, my children had that choice and did just that. Did your children have the same options? |
One Harvard, two Princetons, two Dartmouths. Same as Walls. Meh. Walls is free. |
I'm a NP but your superior attitude and rudeness, typical of prestige-obsessed and classless private school parents, and likely their children, are exactly the reasons both my kids picked Walls over Sidwell. And yes they were admitted to Sidwell. |
This attitude pervades the top 10 schools too. Not a lot to like at the Ivies and similar. |
