My family is an anomaly: stem + humanities/arts brain.
Everyone has STEM and Hunanity- major/minor combo. One son is artistic, fantastic with languages, history, English and also in highest math and sciences. Other son is similar. I was a biochem major/English lit minor. Father was an organic chemist and music/art/history. In some ways I think it was not ultra focusing young—not getting on strict pathways. Liberal arts/Jesuit models of early education. |
This discussion was started by a dumb person. I also think dumb people have kept this thread alive |
If you're at a top undergrad school (like wharton), you will realise on day one that business students are more pragmatic and very driven and know what they want (work on wall street/PE/etc.), while STEM (especially engineering) students are more interested in showing off how "intelligent" they are (generalisation) |
Yes, humanities majors serve in restaurants and Starbucks. |
So employers must be dumb to pay more for business majors. |
![]() My kid wants a "fun" roommate. They are seeking out business majors and avoiding majors like gender studies. |
There are a lot of vocational programs that doesn’t make them any less valuable. Law schools are vocational schools. Computer science is vocational and can be self taught. What’s your point. |
Not all students that major in business are dumb... anecdotally, every single one I know is though. |
Yep, all those employers are super dumb.. so dumb that they create jobs that for all kinds of majors, probably including yours and your kid's. Ever heard of theory of supply and demand, or whatever the market will bear? |
How many top student do you know in this country? There are plenty of teachers in our schools that went to top colleges especially Harvard. |
Can’t be a boomer. Business major was a top choice in their day. |
The dumbest people are the last 5 that revived this dumb thread after it went dormant weeks ago. |
Did any of you go into the arts? |
Not sure chicken first or egg first, but
Employers pay more for business majors in general -> more smart students in business majors on the average -> business schools are generally more competitive -> Employers pay more for business majors in general -> more smart students in business majors on the average -> business schools are generally more competitive, and so on and on https://www.cnbc.com/2024/03/14/highest-paying-college-majors-5-years-after-graduation.html Finance and Business Analytics majors are right under CS/engineering. |
I think today's business majors take more quantitative classes than before. All but one of those ^degrees require a lot more math than a humanities major. |
