Ice cream parlor?

Please suggest a place with some atmosphere where I can take my kid to eat an ice cream sundae or banana split on his birthday. No chains please and I have thought about Serendipity 3 but Georgetown is a pain.

Where are you located?

Lazy Sundae in Falls Church is an option.

If you're in Montgomery County, what about Moorenko's?

Personally, I don't think there are enough good ice cream parlors in the DC area. What is up with that?? I grew up in New York and we had several that we could go to.

It seems like everything here is frozen yogurt. Blech.

The Dairy Godmother in Del Ray. It is technically custard but very very good.

And there used to be a ton here too (swensens, farrells, giffords) but they've all closed. Are all the NY ones still in business? I only see gelato and yogurt places when I am there.

Op since its a birthday I'd go to serendipity. Georgetown isnt that challenging. You could try someplace like Johnny rockets - not sure they've got sundaes. Or the Shake Shack.

What about the parlor at Burke Lake Park? Ride the train and the carousel while you're there.

Yet another thing that bites about this area. New England ice cream shops are the best.

And why isn't there maple-walnut ice cream here?

Giffords reopened in Friendship Heights/Mazza.

For really great ice cream, try York Castle in Rockville, but the ambience is spoiled by Cameron's Seafood next door.

Yuck. It's not really a "parlor" you are better off with Baskin Robbins

Frozen Dairy Bar in Falls Church. Also custard, but very good. there is also a custard place in Vienna that is good.

What about Thomas Sweet's in Upper Georgetown. I've found it is a bit easier to park around there.

Toby's in the Westover neighborhood of Arlington! Awesome ice cream, the owner (Toby) is often behind the counter, and my kids love it.
