Another school comparision question. Looking to move within one of these two school zones and am not sure which is better. DS is an 'average' (gasp i said it ![]() We're just in ES now, so recognize things might change in the next several years, but want to do as much research as we can before we move Anyone with experience of these schools? Recommendations? |
Fewer fights at Sherwood. |
This is your answer, genius? OP, have you checked out Schools at a Glance on the MCPS website? I'd also scan websites to see what is offered. |
Ditto the suggestion to check out the MCPS survey results for both schools.
We were in a similar position last year. The survey results for Magruder were troubling. I posted on here to get more opinions on Magruder but didn't get much of a response. The only thing I've noticed during my year in Olney (my boys are not in HS yet), is that Sherwood seems more connected to the Olney community - like with community fundraisers and such. |
Whoever you are you are real asshole. The poster asked for experience. That is my experience. |
Agree with the PP that mentioned the connection of Sherwood to the Olney community. Sherwood just feels more like a "hometown" school compared to Magruder. |
So you're a teenager who's been to both schools? Or a parent with a child who transferred? Do share your true experiences with me, high school guru, b/c I really don't believe you. |
I worked at both schools. Key word - "worked". Something that you probably don't do. |
I usually defend teachers b/c I am one. But there are times, I, too, just have to step back and wonder how some have lasted. Magruder and Sherwood - LOL - some "tough" schools Try the DCC high schools, and THEN tell me if you've really experienced a fight or gang activity. LOL! Now piss off. |
While I am not here to defend the "more fights" poster - I would never send my kids to our unsafe school that is way safer than DC Schools.
So if Magruder has more fights Magruder has more fights. Why is this so hard to comprehend. Maybe you should call the police station and find out which police officer is assigned to Magruder and which is assigned to Sherwood and ask them if there are any safety issues. I am sure they have a very vivid recounting of the events of the past year. |
It all depends on the current student population. Neither school is at the top 10 best. Neither school has active gang issues. Neither school is "dangerous." All public high schools will have issues. I know kids in both schools and and all of them enjoy it and don't have much negative to say. Your kids can get bullied or beat up at any school, public or private.... |
I think that most people who post on here are clueless about the term "fights" when applied to high schools.
No one is going to get "beat up" or "bullied" in a fight. These are beefs that originate in the community that are carried over to school. The school is the ideal place to settle arguments or grudges because usually the aggrieved. have backup from their friends. If your child does not have issues that start in the hood then you have nothing to worry about. |
If you want to be a part of the Olney community, then aim for Sherwood. |
One prominient teacher and coach at Magruder just moved his family from the Magruder area to the Sherwood area. |
There are no fights at Sandy Spring Friends or Good Counsel so send your kids there..... |
