do I purchase bottles and nipples before the baby is born?

Do people typically stock up on bottles and nipples before the baby arrives? Or, is it best to wait and see what the baby will like? I do plan to breastfeed, but wonder if I should have these supplies in advance. Thanks for any advice you can give.

Due to some problems, I had to supplement some at the beginning with my first son. Because of the situation the hospital sent us home with these little (2 oz?) bottles of pre-mixed formula (all you had to do was put the nipple on -- which they supplied). This was a few years back, so things may have changed. With my second son, BFing went well and we didn't introduce the bottle until the 2nd week. While I don't think you need a full supply of bottles and nipples, I'd suggest having a few on hand in case you really need a break (breastfeeding is really tough and you get very little sleep). That way, you'll be prepared.

I would recommend getting a couple of bottles as back-up. There are so many challenges the first few weeks with a newborn so anything that can help when you're totally exhausted is worth it.

I agree with getting a few -- a pack with two or three bottles. That way you have them on hand, but if baby doesn't like them and you end up having to switch, you don't feel like you wasted a ton of money on bottles you can't use.

And coming from someone who tried almost every pacifier on the market, just buy one per brand until you find out what/if your baby likes! Mine preferred his thumb.
