| Does anyone know if Creative Minds will draw most of its students from Columbia Heights, and serve as a neighborhood school? Or will the kids come from all over? We received a spot and are wondering where the students will be coming from. We're in a neighborhood school now, which we like. Also, any general info people have on Creative Minds would be appreciated - especially if anyone went to the last parents meeting they held. Thank you! |
| It's a charter school, so like every other charter school it will have applicants from all over the city and those that win a space in the lottery or off the waitlist will be admitted. There is no such thing as a neighborhood charter school. |
While this is quite correct, the question as I understood it was whether in fact CM will draw most of its students from Colmbia Heights. From the parents we have met so far, no. But many seem to be form near by neighborhoods; Mt. Pleasant, Shaw, Bloomingdale, Petworth, etc. for general feedback on the school search these boards. There has been a bit of back and forth. |

We are planning on going and live in Columbia Heights. Convenient but we also like the philosophy.
My question--what difference does it make where the students come from, OP? Just curious.... |
| Anyone know whether there's been any movement with the Creative Minds waitlist? We had a single digit waitlist number for PS and I'm actually kind of shocked we haven't heard anything yet. Perhaps they're moving more slowly with notifying parents on the waitlist because they're busy preparing the myriad of things necessary to get the school off the ground? |
| thanks for all the responses. we go to a school now that's a neighborhood charter, meaning all the parents live close by and within walking distance. we really like the community feeling but unfortunately the school is moving. i could see creative minds being somewhat similar, especially if a lot of the students live in the columbia heights area. we live in petworth but will be taking a spot at creative minds for the upcoming year. |

Hi - we live in Takoma and will be taking a PS-3 slot. We haven't yet had an opportunity to meet with any other parents, but I would love to talk to others who are planning to send their child(ren) here. Does anyone know of new family events? I am happy to organize and have reached out to the school to offer to help do so.

| I don't know about PS, but the PK list is moving. We were offered & turned down a spot. Unfortunately, I don't remember our waitlist # since by the time we got it I'd already decided that we'd be taking a spot elsewhere. I'm pretty sure we were in the 20s. |
| We were offered a spot for pre-k yesterday and we turned it down. We were 14 on WL. Thought it looked like a great program, but got into our inbounds school which we are happy with. Creative Minds is inconveniently located for us -- difficult to get to from my office. I hope we don't regret the decision. |
I agree that Pre-k has moved 14 slots. We were #51 and James emailed back early yesterday morning (I know...a response on a holiday) that we are now #37. Really hoping we'll get a spot.

| We're in for PS as well and live in Petworth...any idea as to when they'll post the calendar? |

They're hoping to post a calendar on the website in the beginning of June sometime. I think they're going to try to set up a meet and greet of some sort with the parents, but I'm not sure exactly when that will be. Cap City is still using the building for summer school so I think a lot of stuff will be going on in the month or so before school starts.
Has anyone heard if they might arrange for the kids to meet their teachers and/or the other kids in class before school starts? My DC can be a little on the shy side so I think the switch to the new school might go more smoothly if there is at least some degree of familiarity before dropping DC off on the first day of school. |
| They mentioned they were going to try and do a meet up, one in June and one in July perhaps. School won't be available until August so I'm sure we will be called on for help to get ready. |
| What are the chances of our kid getting enrolled. Currently 35 on the list for Pre K |
