op here. let me clarify, they don't ask if you are jewish, they just ask your ethnicity. i was wondering if it would help in regards to making it more diverse.

I thought Jewish only was a religion, not an ethnicity (not trying to be sarcastic).

Why would you want to send your child to a school where it does matter if you are Jewish???????? That is anti semitism at its best.

ok so if it works to your advantage to be HALF Jew. you will exploit it...if not you will hide it?? IF you practice Judaism you should check it off. If you don't, which I susupect is the case, leave it alone. We are Jewish-practising and have never looked at Judaism as an ethnic entity onto itself, but that's us.

Honestly, I don't see being Jewish as adding more diversity in a private school setting. It is kind of like saying would my Catholic kid add diversity to an Episcopal school or my protestant kid add diversity to Sidwell Friends. I would assume with regards to diversity, they would be looking for minorities, children that come from households that English is the second language, children from low income households (at risk), and perhaps children from gay and lesbian parents. Jewish is not an ethnicity, and IMO they are not underrepresented in society and in educational institutions in general, as opposed to perhaps african-americans, arabs, hispanics, etc. But I guess it can't hurt to write it on the application. Hope it works out for you.

yeah, if they ask about ethnicity i don't think jewish or non-jewish is an answer. i'm half-jewish and it wouldn't occur to me to write that for ethnicity.

OP, a very good proportion of private-school applicants are likely Jewish. I don't think this is what the schools are after in terms of diversity.
