| I'd like to take DC, who is 7, on a few road trips solo this summer, as I can take some time off but DH will be very busy at work. Any suggestions? Thanks. |
| How long are you thinking? I've taken road trips cross country a few times and also did road trips in the Pacific NW and then in the NE. We are also big fans of more local road trips. hard to give advice without knowing your time table though - 3 days? 10 days? Longer? |
Anywhere from a day or two or three to a week, say. Thanks! |

How about Scranton, PA?
There is a National Park there that is all about trains http://www.nps.gov/stea/index.htm I took my kids there when they were about 4, 6, 8, and 10 and they loved it. We spent so long there we didn't get to do something else I've been been dying to check out. A mine tour http://www.lackawannacounty.org/attractions_coal.asp I've been wanting to do that mine tour for a few years now. |
| It is very clear that pp and I are different. The idea of Scranton pa makes me think of I horror film not vacation. |
| 20:35 again, I need to know where pp vacationed as a child. If I heard someone vacationed there I would have thought WT |
| OP here. Don't think I could stomach a mine tour! Trains could be fun. Any other suggestions? |

My daughter loved Luray Caverns. We did it as a day trip, but if we were staying overnight, I'm sure there are lovely Blue Ridge hikes nearby.
Seven might be old enough to appreciate Monticello, and almost definitely Colonial Williamsburg. I'm looking forward to doing those with my now-five-year-old NEXT summer and beyond. |

Aside from the train museum, Scranton is not the ideal place for a road trip. The town is fairly depressed to say the least.

PP who recommended Scranton here. As a child, I lived in Massachusetts...vacations often consisted of ski trips in NH or VT. Once we went to Disney World, once we went to So. Cal, and another time to San Francisco. We also took a trip to Niagara Falls and a couple trips down to this area to do DC/Charlottesville/Williamsburg stuff. I also spent two whole summers in Spain. I'm not really sure what that has to do with my suggestion that trains and mine tours might make a fun 2 day road trip for a school age boy? |
