Airconditioning - a guilty pleasure or a necessity?

What temperature is your A/C set on right now? Mine is on 74 but I feel guilty, like we should be able to wait a bit longer before using it 24/7.

76 and only running during the hottest part of the day (12-6pm).

My husband doesn't want us to turn it on btu I am working from home because I am sick, and my computer was overheating. I turned it on 74, and now thinking about turning it up to 76. And will turn it off before he gets home!

But I will own up to it. It's too humid and today I jsut could'nt take it anymore. Not certain we can get through the weekend.

If DH wasn't around I'd rarely use it. I can withstand temps up to 82 without discomfort.

However, in the spring/pollen season, I NEED it, because I have allergies and can't open the windows when there is yellow crap everywhere.

Necessity!! Need it. Run it almost all year round and definitely ALL DAY during the summer.

I feel no guilt for having my AC running for days now. I'm in a 3 level home and the upstairs is unbearable without it. I can handle the mid and basement levels, but upstairs no way.

We are not surrounded by the lush tropics of Costa Rica and until that happens, I will proudly run my ac!

How long have you lived here in DC? It's a NECESSITY to function and remain sane.

I grew up without it, so I don't consider it a necessity. However, now that I have it I feel no guilt about using it anytime the temps in my house pass comfortable.

I completely agree.

I had to run it the other night for 30 mintues to knock the humidity in the house down.

Absolutely a necessity for me, but I hate hot weather. We have a programmable thermostat, and I think it is set at around 76 during the day when no one is home, 74 in the evenings, and 72 at night.(I like it cold when I sleep) Our house is very well insulated though, and I'd rather pay more towards an electric bill than be uncomfortable in my house.

We only turn it on when we get company and then we set for 78 or 79.

why would you turn your AC on for a 79 temp. ? DOes it even make difference? For me, anything more than 72 is the same as nothing.

My house is set at 68 all day long. The house I work as a nanny is 72 (perfect temperature!). I think 68 is too cold but I can handle and my husband is obsessed with AC.

We have horrible allergies, so it is a necessity during high pollen counts. We've had it on for weeks (73/74) and I don't feel guilty at all. I see no reason to be sitting in a hot, humid house if I don't have to.
I LOVE having the windows open when it's nice outside, but it's so not worth it in terms of how much we suffer with sneezing, watery eyes, and having pollen all over everything.

OP, where are you from? If you are from south of here, the summer heat and humidity won't phase you. If you are from north of here, it will be pure hell - and yes, a/c will be a necessity for at least three months.

we keep ours around 78, 79
