What is your opinion about Mr. Starr?
Seriously, what can parents do? I was disgusted by the facts stated in the Post's editorial. The priority of our tax dollars for "education", should be first to provide the best education possible to the students in our county through the reduction of class size, the opportunity for learning not just the core academic subjects, but also exposure to art, music and P.E. We have seen first hand at our elementary school the effects the budget cut has had on the students - larger classes, art, music and P.E. time reduced, etc. The decisions, Mr. Starr and other administrators make in favor of increasing teachers salaries have and will continue to have negative consequenses in our communities. As the editorial states, MCPS teachers are already the best compensated teachers as comparted to any other jurisdiction. Mr. Starr's cited comments about morale being a reason for the granting teachers raises during this time of recession and reduced budgets is elementary and a slap in the face of other county, state and private workers whose taxes pay for the education of their children. Like any other worker during this time in particular, teachers should be happy to have a job; and in MCPS because of the strong unions, those teachers are well compensated both in salary and benefits and later in their pensions. How do we vote Mr. Starrr out?
|
I'm not impressed with Starr. More jargon, not enough explaining why things are really important.
Give them more money so they complain less? Is that what it boils down to? The teachers to deserve to be paid well, they do work hard and do jobs many people wouldn't even consider. The priorities do seem out of wack. Our kids (MCPS Elem) have more time in Art, Phys ed, music and media so the teachers have more planning time for curriculum 2.0. |
While I think most of us would like - in a perfect world - to be able to pay teachers more and more. But it isn't a perfect world and we just can't pay for these types of increases. Many of us paying taxes to support these increases (and the pensions that go along with them) are not receiving increases at our jobs, so the additional taxes will really hurt. This isn't about begrudging teachers additional pay, it is about recognizing that, at some point, this feels like extortion by the teachers unions. We just can't afford these increases. The fact that our kids are suffering (larger classes, fewer specialty teachers, less PE, art, etc.), feels like insult added to injury. |
Screw little students : do not allow capable students in math to advance stunting their growth
Give teachers (? administrators) a raise. The money for this raise comes from the parents of the vulnerable population of students being srewed! ...smells like the bailout of Wall Street by the screwed taxpayer all over again. |
Why don't you start a drive to fire STarr?? Whining about the stupid math advance isn't going to get you anywhere. Do something constructive. |
Explains why you haven't gotten any where? Just watch. |
I don't like Dr. Starr. He has these listening sessions, but he manages the crowd and doesn't really answer to the core issues. He was hired in secret by the BOE and seems to have a plan to ram this new curriculum down our throats, remove gifted classes at local schools, and pay teachers whatever the union decides. All of his efforts at outreach are just a pretend way to hear feedback. He really is just a union guy. Of course, voters support this approach. I will continue to vote against the apple ballot and hope others catch on. Our only hope for change is to change the BOE. |
GTA--get over it. u got dissed--live with it. your president interviewed STarr in secret and that was good. when u get treated the way u treat others u get all hot and bothered. get a life. |
will be watching. can already see how far you've gotton. |

I am not GTA. I just stated my opinion. I am not sure what you are talking about. |

Here is what Starr mentioned today: http://www.nytimes.com/2012/05/26/opinion/the-danger-in-school-spending-cuts.html
Isn't it what he is doing. He got brought by the unions, MCCPTA, GTA, etc secretly meeting with him. was given a huge salary, car, body guards, sends his children to exclusive schools--"private" public schools. Yeah, keep him on a few more years. |
Who is Marion Berry? Is he from MCPS? |
