Do you think lying on your back after sex really helps?

I know this is way TMI, but I've heard that you should lay on your back after sex while TTC to keep the sperm in there and give the best chance for them to get where they need to be. On one hand, this kind of makes sense. If I jump up right after, or if I've been on top, all that sperm comes right out. But then again, lots of people get pregnant without "trying" and I doubt they are all laying around on their backs, right? How long does it take for the sperm to find the cervix?

So what do you think? And what do you actually do?

I feel really inappropriate asking this, but I'm really curious.

No, I don't think it helps. That said, I did try to do it! I think I read somewhere that the sperm have raced ahead in like 30 seconds or something, and that it's the force of the orgasm that sends them on their way!

I used to do that (can't hurt, right?) and then learned I have an inverted uterus- so it seems you should lie on your belly in that case (and two blocked tubes but that's a different story).

Did it with both kids, got pregnant on first or second try with both.

I put my legs up against the wall afterwards, so I was pretty much upside down. Got pregnant first try.

I asked DH to grab me by my ankles and keep me upside down for 3.3 minutes, while walking around the bedroom. It worked.

There is no medical evidence that lying on your back after intercourse increases conception rates. (There are some studies that suggest lying on your back for a short time after IUIs is helpful, but that's different from intercourse.)

But it surely won't hurt, so do what you like.

Nope, in fact I stood up immediately after every time while we were trying and got pregnant no the first try. Unfortunately miscarried, but that's irrelevant

Depends. If you have a retroverted uterus this will not help at all and could hurt. If your uterus is positioned normally, I don't see the harm.

Yes, I do. At least, it can't hurt. I lied down either face up or down, with a pillow under my pelvis.
The more sperm have a chance to swim up there, the higher the chance of conception. Only a small fraction of sperm get in the cervix in 30 secs. Watch the The great sperm race http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gAnMymnJiLM

I have a retroverted uterus, and don't understand this. I can see why it might be better face down than supine, but standing/ sitting have got to be worse.

I have one too and don't see why it would "hurt". Like PP says, certainly seems better than standing. Lying down afterwards has been proven to help with IUI success rates - why wouldn't the same prove true when trying naturally? At least it can't hurt... worked for us
