Massive Shift in Black Opinion Toward Same Sex Marriage in Maryland

Remember when black voters were going to defeat same sex marriage in Maryland? Well, maybe not so much:

http://www.publicpolicypolling.com/pdf/2011/MarylandPollingMemo.pdf

"The movement over the last two months can be explained almost entirely by a major shift in opinion about same-sex marriage among black voters. Previously 56% said they would vote against the new law with only 39% planning to uphold it. Those numbers have now almost completely flipped, with 55% of African Americans planning to vote for the law and only 36% now opposed."

Keep in mind that the National Association of Marriage (NOM) had an explicit plan to use same sex marriage to drive a wedge between the black and gay communities. I guess they need to go back to the drawing board.

This mirrors a national trend. The black community has moved a fair bit in the last year.

This is leadership. Obama is leading, and now other black public figures are commenting, like Colin Powell. It is having its effect.

I find this somewhat insulting. I don't follow any "leader" any more than any white American does.

We are not a monolith.

Following what Obama says because he is black is just as terrible as someone NOT following what Obama says becuase he is black.

Do you really think all of the black voters are voting for Obama because they agree with his politics? Give me a break. Many of them (and white people too) have no idea where he stands on many issues.

Is Obama the leader of all Americans or just the Black ones. You are a frigging idiot or bigot. As if we, Black people, need to be led and spoon fed. Who's your leader?

OMG he is the leader of both. He's our President, and he's the first Black President. If you want to pretend that it has no significance, fine. If you want to pretend that people are not motivated and persuaded by leaders, be my guest, but it's ridiculous. Whether it is business, politics, the arts, or religion, leaders shape opinion. So fine, the Pope is just another voice in a fancy hat, Dr. King was just a random guy in a march, the minister in the pulpit is just there to kick off the hymns, and dammit I feel that the term "Founding Fathers" is condescending because I don't need a parent to take care of me.

What is the point of this post?

It's treading on the line of being offensive.

What's the white opinion these days and who is the white leader? Who is the Latino leader and what do all Latinos vote for or against? What about those Chinese? Who is influencing the Chinese vote in America and who do they follow?

Or is it just black people that can be grouped into "black people do this and follow this person because they have no opinions or brain cells"

Dear moron, this is not a "Black" thing. And there is not only one leader of anything.

I'm not sure what post you are referring to, but I wrote the first post in this thread. I didn't say anything about a leader. There have been many threads on this website about how black voters are disproportionately anti-gay marriage. Now we have data that shows that is not the case. I don't know why this alleged trend has changed, if it has even changed. I'm just glad that there are more votes in support of gay marriage in Maryland.

Also the North Carolina amendment passed. If you are a Marylander, do you really want to follow North Carolina's footsteps?
