Any recommendations for a good reproductive urologist in the DC area? If our next round of IUI is not successful, before we move to further cycles or IVF, we'd like to get more comprehensive testing done for my husband beyond the initial workup our RE did. He has an autoimmune disorder that he receives fairly intense drug treatment for every 8 weeks, and there is some evidence that it can affect the chemical makeup or antibodies in semen which aren't detectable in the normal analysis. And because we're entirely out of pocket for IF treatment, we want to eliminate any uncertainties.
We saw Dr. Sherins - He is through Columbia Fertility- but I would imagine anyone (i.e. non CF patient) could go see him. My husband and I were both impressed... he knew his stuff and was VERY THOROUGH with his testing... he did both hormone and chromosomal testing on my DH in addition to the "standard" urological test. He was very well versed on what treatment would work best for us and what our odds would be. He doesn't sugar coat things but he is very compassionate (had to break out the tissues for me a couple of times )--
REALLY SUCKS you are going through this but if you have to I would say Sherins is as good as they come. Good Luck! |
Dr. Shin - http://www.dcurology.net/shin.html
Another vote for Dr Paul Shin, he's incredibly smart but very personable.
Sincere thanks, everyone!! I will check out Dr. Sherins and Dr. Shin. Would just rather see someone sooner than continue to throw money away if there is a problem....
Dr. Schlegel at Cornell is fantastic. Drs. Sherin and Shin are very, very good, but we found Schlegel to be a cut above in terms of thoroughness.
Thank you, 11:47. I had heard good things about Cornell, too. Unfortunately we are entirely out of pocket for all this, and have additional expenses related to my husband's disease, so we need to try someone in our insurance plan first (Shin and Sherins are both covered.) But if that's not successful, hopefully I can convince hubby to venture to NY.
I have nothing but good things to say about Dr. Shin. I think he is fantastic, and for what it is worth, he is very good at communicating on what can be a very sensitive and uncomfortable subject. THis I think is especially amazing given that he is talking to men
My husband sees Dr. Ratner who has offices in Silver Spring & Rockville if you're looking further outside of the city. Good luck!
Thanks to you both! Great to have these three options as I was basically starting from scratch.
Another fan of Dr. Shin. He's very down to earth and took the time to sit down and talk to me after DH's surgery and give me his contact info if I had any questions. I believe he is the only, if not one of a few, doctors who hold certain board certifications in DC. He was originally recommended to me by a friend of a friend who is an MD. She said if you need a urologist, you want Dr. Shin.
That is great to know, thank you! Now if we could just get an appointment quicker than 7 weeks out. Ahh, the joys of D.C.
