has anyone bought any gold coins? I looked online briefly last night and the one site sold them in units of 10. I am just looking to buy one for a special gift. If you have bought them - where & what kind?
TIA! |
| Try a jewelry store that caters to middle easterners and Indians. Gold coins are a traditional gift, especially for marriage, so I'm sure the jewelers in areas with big immigrant populations sell them. There's a jewelry store in a big Indian shopping center at the intersection of New Hampshire and University Blvd, in Takoma Park. |
| OP here, a jewelry store would sell kruggerands? Maybe we are talking about different gold coins? |

What a great gift idea! We've got a lot of our money invested in gold coins. A kruggerand is an ounce of gold--I don't know what the price is right now but up in the $800 range?
We're no longer in DC so I don't know about local dealers there, but I would look in the yellow pages under coin dealers or gold and just call and ask if they carry the particular coins you're looking for and the price. Where we live we've bought from a place called the Colorado Coin and Metals exchange, for example. The price should be reasonably close to the price of an ounce of gold, which you can find easily in the financial pages or online. Kruggerands may be a little harder to find, we've bought Canadian Maple Leafs as well. We have bought and had shipped to us coins, including Kruggerands, from a dealer in Arizona--my FIL has bought about 50 coins from them as well and they have a good reputation. They're called Resource Consultants and their website is www.buysilvernow.com. Telephone is (480) 820 - 5877. I bet they would sell a single coin, but you may have to pay by check and wait for it to clear (unless you pay cash I believe many coin dealers work this way). Their website should have current market information as well. |
| 10:02 here. Yes, we're talking about different things. When you said it was for a gift, I assumed you meant something with as much ceremonial value as monetary. I received gold coins for my wedding, but they're smallish, and I'll keep them to give to other family members on special occasions. They're not like savings bonds or anything! |
| OP here again - thanks for the help! Glad you thought it was a good gift idea....it is for my DS for his 1st bday....will get him a few toys too....but wanted to get him something special that may be helpful to him down the road. |
| 10:51 again--we actually cashed in our son's 529 because the returns were unimpressive and we didn't like how limited our investment choices were and bought silver and gold coins instead. It's nice because when you sell them down the road you don't have the tax implications that you have when selling stocks. |
