do i need a tarp?

going camping tomorrow. one night. not supposed to rain. first time camping. school trip.

have a tent. do i need a tarp to go under it? (have borrowed one but trying to pare down what i'm bringing.)

If the ground is dry you can get away without having one. Also if you have a tent that comes with a ground cloth (separate piece of waterproof fabric that is shaped like the bottom of the tent) then you don't need one. The tarp or ground cloth also helps keep the bottom of the tent from ripping on anything on the ground. So if damp or not perfectly clear ground I would reccommend a tarp/ground cloth.

Regardless of the weather, I always put a tarp under the tent. You know if you don't, you're just asking for a freak monsoon.

Actually, you DO need a tarp because it protects the bottom of the tent, regardless of rain. Also, it will reduce moisture from dew in the morning.

Make sure the tarp doesn't extend past the edges of the tent (fold if necessary). This is a rookie mistake that will leave you wet and miserable if it does rain.

A tarp is always good to have even if you don't think you need it. Other things in this category: bug spray, multitool, flashlight, string, a towel, a breakfast bar.

Bring the tarp. otherwise its like having a tent on top of rocks
