Is iPod appropriate gift for 7YO's birthday?

My nephew is turning 7 this year and it was suggested by his parents that he would really like an iPod Nano for his birthday. I was a bit surprised by this suggestion, as it seems like a pretty expensive gift for a birthday, not to mention that 7 seems a bit young (to me) for an iPod. Am I off base?

not really. my 8 year old niece has one but she is also an extremely responsible child. her brothers have the cheaper shuffle since they have been known to lose plenty of things...

I think an ipod is too much at that age. A shuffle, maybe.

Every family is different, but that seems like a lot to spend on a gift for a 7 yo to me.

Shuffle seems more appropriate to me but if the parents want to give him a nano then that's their business. What seems odd is that it sounds they suggested *you* should buy it. That seems a bit much.

i'd give a target or best buy gift certificate for the amount you budgeted and let the kid and parents decide. But personally, my 7 yr old would not be getting an ipod.

FYI, I was looking to buy a low-end ipod as a gift and a store clerk recommended against the shuffle since it is so small and gets lost easily!! Having mistakenly tossed an MP3 player myself, I see the logic in that - maybe especially true for a kid. But of course the Nano is a lot more $$. The scary thing to me is the gift escalation - if a 7yo gets a pricey ipod from an aunt, what do you get him at 18?? I'm trying to buy a 21st bday gift for my niece who drives a Lexus and has every luxury known to mankind. It's totally intimidating.

Wow, they must think you're made of money. I think it is an inappropriate gift just because it's so extravagant.

I totally agree with this.

No way.

An iPod Nano runs $150-200 depending on the model. That's pretty hefty! I would not have suggested that.

As for whether it is appropriate for a seven year old... maybe. Earbuds can damage adult ears, so I'm sure they aren't great for kids. I think you can limit the sound, but still the buds sit right in the ear. Also, kids cannot hear what's going on around them, which could be dangerous and doesn't help their social development.

Not. My niece got a digital camera for her 9th birthday from her mother-$400-lost it the SAME DAY she got it!

OP here - thanks for the all feedback - I'm glad that I'm not completely out of touch. I should clarify that the suggestion was not just for one aunt/uncle to shoulder, but for two or possibly three to go in on it together. I still think it would be in the $50-$75++ range even if multiple people went in on it, so would be more manageable, but I'm still not OK with the idea in general. I think it would be more work for the parents to keep track of it and to load it with the music, etc. I just can't see this boy doing all of this himself at this age. I'm glad to see I'm not the only one who feels this way. Thanks.

Not appropriate at all. And the parents should think twice about wanting their 7 YO to have one.
