book about feelings for preschooler

Anonymous
hi folks:

can anyone recommend a book about feelings that would be appropriate for a 3yo? our 3yo son has been diagnosed with adhd and has some problems with emotional regulation. would love to be able to read a book together that would help him at least identify feelings, with the goal of learning how to modulate reactions, help him to be more expressive etc...

Not sure if this will be what you're looking for but we (my 4 yo and I) love the "How Do Dinosaurs" series. They have them for playing with friends, going to bed, get well soon, etc. My son and I make a silly game out of reading those that we have and he seems to enjoy it.

I recommend calling Bank Street Books in NYC. There is also a website www.bankstreetbooks.com that you can take a look at. Bank Street is a school for teachers that encompasses a preschool and a bookstore.

But I would call them and ask for recommendations for your specific situation - which will, of course, not be new to them. Used to live in NYC and found them very helpful.

There was one I used to use in therapy with children that was about a turtle with adhd, but I don't recall the name, sorry. GL!

Its not exactly targeting preschoolers, but my 3 yo daughter really liked Today I Feel Silly by Jamie Lee Curtis, which has Today I feel....angry, great, sad, lonely, frustrated, joyous, in it. I think it helped a bit to let her know that it was ok to have bad days. But its about a girl, so I don't know if a boy would like it as much. Also, she has Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day (or something like that) from school that she liked.

My four year old son loves Today I Feel Silly -- doesn't matter that the main character is a girl. Definitely a great book to talk about how you are feeling.
