Why don't diet sodas work?

I've seen many people suggest cutting diet sodas when trying to lose weight.

If its really only 1 calorie in that can... how does this make any difference over drinking water?

Can somebody please explain, because it is not intuitively obvious.

Because its full of crap! Just because it has less calories does not mean its good for you.

Read the ingredients....google them...then go from there.

Because for some people drinking diet soda increases the desire to eat (sweet things in particular). Water on the other hand does not do this.

I don't know exactly, but consuming any highly processed crap isn't good for us. Its a creepy sludge of chemicals. Who knows what it might be doing in your body? Maybe creating some kind of hormone response?

The chemicals in it trigger in your brain that you are getting sugar. But you're not. So your body then craves the sugar, and counterproductively, you then go on a sugar binge to give your body the sugar it wants. Supposedly. I happen to think regular Coke is too heavy and syrupy so I drink Diet Coke. Not to lose weight or diet, just because I like the way it tastes. And I rarely even eat sweets, let alone binge on them.

Uh I dont believe you. Unless diet soda is all you had and gastric bypass surgery...no I dont believe you. And another thing...its extremely unhealhty to drink that much soda diet or not in general.

All the chemical crap that is in there impacts your body, your metabolism, etc. You' re not ingesting water, you're ingesting all kinds of chemicals whose imacts are obviously not well understood.

You misunderstand me. I didn't lose weight from drinking diet soda. I lost weight from dieting, and also drank diet soda. Many people drink diet soda while dieting and have no problem regulating their diet.

Without even getting into all the other negative effects of things contained in soda or diet soda (what it does to your teeth, stomach, organs, ingredients in diet soda increasing risk of stroke, etc.), it's thought that the fake "sugar" in diet soda can lead to intense cravings for sweet things and you end up eating more than you otherwise would.
