Expectant and Postpartum Moms
| Could anyone who has tested Rh Negative please tell me about your experience. Does it just involve a shot around 28 weeks and another post-birth? |
| YES, YES. One warning though- the shot is in your butt (yikes !). |
Actually, my shot was in my arm. It was a big one though! |
| Mine was in my upper arm. It wasn't bad, sort of like getting the flu shot. |
| Hi, I am rh negative and both times got a shot right away when the doctor verified my pregnancy and at 28 weeks again. My shot was in the arm also and it was a biggie - hurt like heck! |
| A subject that will in all likelihood not be an issue for you--should you miscarry, you will also get the shot. I miscarried my first early on, and got it, and then with the 2nd pregnancy had it at 28 weeks and then after giving birth. Also, just want to point out that if your husband (er, the father, to be technically correct) is also negative, you won't need the shot. It is to keep your body from creating antibodies against the "invading" embryo/fetus. It's necessary whenever your blood may mix with the baby's which is why you get it at 28 weeks (to be safe) and after giving birth (it's been a while, but I think within 72 hours). |

You also get a shot at birth if the baby is RH +. Mine was negative so I only got the one (in the thigh and not a big needle).

| I had a shot after an amnio, at 28 weeks, and then didn't need a shot after DD was born because she, too, is RH negative. |
| I had a shot (in my rear) after my amnio, at 28 weeks, and after my son was born since he was Rh positive. It was really no biggie. |
| I find the shot kind of painful but quick. It has to be given in the muscle so a little soreness is common afterwards. The most important thing my doc told me was that you need to call and come in for the shot if you experience any bleeding (even light spotting) during the pregnancy. Otherwise, you'll just get one at 28 wks and after the birth. |

Everyone has covered it all already but just to chime in - yes, for a normal pregnancy you need the shot around 28 weeks and then again after the birth (if child is positive).
Any other time there is a possibility for the baby's blood to mix with mother's blood they give the shot. I had it once in my first pregnancy when I miscarried; I had it twice in my second pregnancy (once when I had bleeding in the first trimester and again at 28 weeks; I didn't have it after the birth because my DD was also negative) and I've had it once so far with this pregnancy (after an amnio around 16 weeks). They didn't give it again at 28 weeks - not sure why. I've had it both in my butt and in my arm - it's not really a big deal. |
You might want to ask your doc why you didn't recieve the 28-week shot. They didn't give me one after my amnio. After I realized the next day, I called to let them know. Turns out the doc had just forgotten to give me one and they had me come in right away for the shot. With the 28-week shot I don't think it would be a problem for you to get it later than 28 weeks as long as it's prior to birth (when blood can mix). So, it might be a good idea to follow up just in case. |
| 13:47 here - good point. I will ask next week when I go in. We just moved back to the area so I've had a lot on my mind but you're right - I should make sure it doesn't fall through the cracks in case I need it again. |
| 22:55 here - I asked my OB about whether or not I need another Rhogam shot (I had one following an amnio around 16 weeks) and he sent me for a blood draw to determine if there is still enough in my system or if I need another shot before the birth. I'll know in a couple hours. Thanks again to the PP for reminding me to ask him! |
