Hello,
My DD got low GBRS (8) but got good comments. The comment from teacher doesn’t match with GBRS (8). She didn't get AAP in 3rd grade. She get most of Os and Gs in her report card and her DRA level was 28 (2nd grade benchmark score) at the end of first grade. I wonder if she can get in to AAP if I appeal and get a high WISC test. Should I ask to teacher why she given only 8 but with good comments? |

The smiley face is "8"

| The teacher does not give the GBRS with commentary -- the local screening committee does. |

If I am not mistaken, GBRS comments are all typically positive. Teachers write what the student is capable of and does well, not what they are struggling with and need to work on. While the comments describe the child's behaviors, the number rating indicates how "gifted" the child's behavior is.
If your dd had test scores consistently above the benchmark, she has a good chance of being found eligible with a high WISC score. |
| Just relax and realize being in the AART program is not the end of the world for your child. |
| It won't hurt to ask. Also perhaps do a WISC. Often times gifted kids don't get a high GBRS. |
OP didn't say anything about end of the world for her/his child. Just want some info from other parents. Why are you saying this?? |
My DD is in a similar situation as your DD (get almost of Os in her report card and her DRA level was 28, GBRS (10), HIGH remarks in all categories on her commentary report. We were disappointed to learn that she was not accepted into the AAP program. We were planning to appeal the decision. I called the AAP central office and spoke with a member and got some very useful information. She said is not the score issue, taking another IQ will not help as much as a good appeal letter and additional information about your child. I also requested a copy of my DD's screening file and found out what was weak in the GBRS and form arguments and a perspective for the appeal. I hope this ifno will help, good luck to your DD. |

10:18: Thanks for sharing your experience with your DD. So, did you discuss with your DD's teacher about the GBRS?
Also, did you write an own appeal letter? Or did someone write a recommendation letter for your DD? I want to ask to teacher why she gave only 8 for the GBRS. Compare to other kids in her class who got higher GBRS (14+), I don't see much different than my DD, and in some area my DD talks/volunteer more in the class. Since she is smart kid and very polite kid in the class, I wonder why the teacher gave such low GBRS. I'm so sad and it gives me a lot of stress when I'm thinking about it. |
