sex drive related to sperm count?

Anonymous
My husband has always had a low-ish sex drive (he is in his 40s) in comparison to men I dated before I met him. I figured this was just part of his personality and left it at that. But, he took one of those at-home sperm count tests over the weekend and it said that he is low (below 200 million I believe). He doesn't want to see a doctor just yet since the sperm tests he used are considered semi-reliable. However I am convinced that his low sperm count is related to his low sex drive. Clearly I haven't mentioned this hypothesis to him yet because he would be quite offended and upset...but could I be correct?

a good friend of mine (really good) were struggling with IF due to male factor, she also told me his sex drive was very low and my friend is HOT! and a great package in general...but seriously like once a month is their norm....so possible IMO

I can actually answer this question. I have a low sex drive, was recently tested and confirmed that my testosterone is much lower than normal. But my sperm count has always been high -- the nurse even commented during one of the cycles that I had the highest count out of everyone that day.
So the two are not related.

As for your husband not wanting to go to the doctor, this seems to be common for men. I don't get it. After having gone through a number of cycles with my wife, I have had to make and appointment to provide semen samples a number of times. Everyone is very professional. A bit awkward yes, like when the female tech tells you how to use the video to play porn or points out where the magazines are, but not embarrassing. If it helps, Columbia Fertility also had a couple of golf magazines.

highly doubt it since I've had a vasectomy and still want sex daily ...

the funny thing about testerone is that if you take it, it actually lowers your sperm count! Before TTC, my husband had a very low sex drive and got his testosterone tested and it was very low. He was put on prescription testosterone and it did wonders in 4-6 weeks and he kept taking it. WE starting seeing an RE and did the initial tests, his sperm count was ok but not great and then got significanatly lower each month during IUI. I casually mentioned the prescription testoterone he was on and Dr Butler told him to IMMEDIATELY stop it as it lowers sperm count. He said if they ever develp a male birth control pill it will testosterone based. its counter intuitive becuase a lot of testosterone makes you want sex but the supplements really lower the sperm count.

You got aroused by golf magazines? No wonder your sex drive is low.

What comes out of the muzzle isn’t necessarily correlative with what’s in the magazine

Those at home tests are extremely inaccurate btw! We did the same, my husbands test came back low so in a panic we went to SGF to get tested and his were in total normal range. The doc said not to trust at home tests.

That said my husband also has verrrry low sex drive (like almost non existent, yes dead bedroom now) but he also has low (his is likely horrible diet/exercise so that explains it all). His sperm quality was affected by this.

This does really sound like low T. It can happen as early as the 40s in some men. Stress makes it worse.

Has he had it tested?

That's exactly why DH should talk to the RE. 50% of the time infertility is related to male factors. Meanwhile with IVF so much is on the wife - all the medications, surgical procedures, etc. The good thing about male infertility is that because men produce sperm continuously there can be a good opportunity to improve sperm count and quality with various approaches like supplements, healthy practices etc whereas a woman is born with all the eggs she will ever have. But let the RE lead in terms of why sperm count is low and how it may be increased. There are also many ways getting around low sperm count like IUI or IVF with ICSI so it may not really matter.

I've heard that there are some studies that have shown that ejaculating every day is correlated with higher-quality sperm in men when compared to those who had not ejaculated in 7 days.
