Our pediatrician recommends Benadryl for a bedtime cough. It always helps DD get some rest.

I used pediasure (I think that's what its called). I just cut the minimum dosage in half. A total godsend!!! My doc told me "off the record" to go ahead and use it

I never understand why babies should be made to suffer just b/c a few stupid parents ruined it with overdosing. Imagine being sick wiht coughing fits and conjestion with no relief.

Give old-fashioned honey a try: http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/honey/AN01799

Perhaps with some Vick's vapor rub, and children's motrin or tylenol in case of a sore throat.

We bought Hyland's cough - which is all natural (primarily honey) at Walgreen's. Have not used it yet since DS's last cough is finally over, but planning to try it out next time he gets sick.

Since your child is over 1, defintiely give a spoonful of honey.

In addition, put a humidifier in the room (or turn off the AC and open the window) and try some Vicks vapo-rub.

I second the honey and humidifier (full blast), and also propping up the mattress head end a bit sometimes helps. If there's another night of coughing to the point of no sleep - I would call back and ask again if there's anything else you should be doing. Hang in there both of you!

It's worth noting that the honey study saw results with buckwheat honey, in particular. I had to look pretty hard to find it and ended up having to buy a very big container at a health food store; the flavor is stronger than other honey, though, so it's not really something I would use in cooking, for tea, etc. So if you can find a small container of it, I'd recommend getting that.

I'll also second the Benadryl recommendation; it's an antihistamine, so it dries out the post-nasal drip that causes some of the coughing. It also helps them sleep. You can find dosages on Dr. Sears' website.

I'd also spend some time in the bathroom with the shower going full blast. The steam helps my son when he's got a cough. And if your daughter's not interested in the honey (my son wasn't), you might try it in some warm milk.
