I hate my commute and want more time with my family. I live in Chantilly and commute to DC daily (drive to Vienna and park and then Metro in). I want to continue working as a federal employee and I'm trying to figure out what Fed. agencies would make a better commute for me so I can focus my efforts. I have a legal background FWIW.
there are a bunch of federal agencies either located entirely or with branches in NOVA. CIA is a biggie. DHS in Crystal City. EOIR in Falls church.
DEA
DoD, FBI, FAA, CIA, DHS FEMA, TSA, Ginnie Mae (?)
NGA
EOIR and part of SSA share a building near baileys crossroads
If you go to USAJobs https://my.usajobs.gov/ , you can do a search by location. LOTS of federal agencies have offices in NOVA but some of them might be quite small. Also, some agencies have multiple offices across the metro area. It would suck to apply for a job at the SEC thinking you'll be in their Alexandria location but then find out that the duty station is next to Union Station - or discount a job because you think it's downtown when it's really in NOVA.
GSA
USPTO is in Alexandria
Fish & Wildlife is in Ballston
OP here. I have tried putting in within 5 miles of 22033, but it gives me hits on anything in DC (which isn't 5 miles from 22033). I haven't had much luck with the location search on USAJobs. The concern you raised above is exactly my concern! Thanks for so many suggestions everyone, I'll take more if you have them! I was just told I can't telecommute next Friday but I am free to leave early to take my child to an appointment. I need a new job... |
