Summer Educational Enrichment Ideas

Anonymous
Parent of a second grader, above average student, daughter will be going to day camp most of the summer. In the past I have purchased workbooks, tried on-line programs. Just wanted some ideas of what other parents are using such as workbooks, on-line tutoring programs, software programs to give my daugher a preview of 3rd grade math and wrting. No help needed in reading. Maybe even inexpensive tutoring centers. I want her to have fun, but also would like her to spend maybe an hour or so learning during the summer. We live in the Springfield area. Please be specific. Thanks!

Do you have an ipad? We did 10 minutes of multiplication table games each day during the summer between 3rd and 4th for reinforcement. When 4th grade started, the teacher did multiplication table timed tests and every time a kid passed a test they moved ahead in their "race." My daughter was the 3rd child overall in the class to finish the "race" and the 1st girl to finish. There are a zillion games to choose from in all different subjects in the app store.

I agree with the PP. Memorize multiplication facts in fun ways. There are a zillion apps for them. My son loves Splash Math on the iPod (check to see if there is a 3rd grade version). It gives a good overview of all types of math. As for writing, have her write in a journal. Make it a response journal where you have an ongoing "dialogue." Also, have her write to specific prompts to work on her paragraph construction.

Thanks for the suggestions so far. We do not have an iPad. Daughter has a Nook and a laptop computer. We have some of the math games. I will keep checking for other games. May consider purchasing an inexpensive iPad. Would still love to hear from others. Thanks again, very helpful folks out there.
