s/o saying things you regret: what's the worst thing that slipped out?

mine embarrasses me, even years later

my college roommate was dating this guy that she wasn't sleeping with - she was very catholic and wanted to wait until marriage and they'd been going out a year or so when his female friends from back home came to visit. the guy had been a big player (from what i gathered from the friends) and came over to meet my roommate without the guy... they came over and almost immediately launched into stories about how much he used to hook up with vague innuendos like "oh my god, do you remember the time in the basement?" with big "OOOOH yeah!" and the girls rolling their eyes at each other... and it just got worse and worse and my roommate was getting super quiet - and out of nowhere, i said, "well, he's not getting ANY of that here."

horrible. horrible.

I was going through a hard time on the heals of a family crisis and was abusing alcohol quite a bit, getting drunk all the time, going to work hung over, etc. One of my sister's friends had a sister who I really didn't like, but I know my sister's friend was very close to her sister. One night I just blurted out, "You know, I never liked her." I was drunk. Yeah.
She was stunned, and we haven't been friends since. Can't say that I blame her.

This was years ago, but a family friend had a miscarriage and when she told me what she lost the baby the first thing that slipped out of my mouth was "oh no, what did you do?" I feel terrible about that and it was over 10 years ago.

I cringe every time I think of this. A number of years ago I went to visit my friend and her husband. They played competitive ice hockey and one of them was always getting hurt. I came into their house and saw a pair of crutches against the wall, and said "uh oh, who's the gimp?" Turns out they were going to introduce me to their new friend who had cerebral palsy. I wanted to die.

This reminded me of *one* of mine. I think I have more than I can count. But, anyway, in this case, my roommate in college was hosting a prospective student who just happened to be blind. We met with her and had some dinner, hung out in the room, typical stuff. Then the student just got real tired and had to go to bed. Someone offered to turn out the light and I blurted out, "What difference does it make? She doesn't need it off and we need it on." Stunned even myself. To this day I feel horrible about it.

I have two: one was when I had babies on the brain and was attending a class at the gym with a mommy crowd. I stupidly asked a woman if she was pregnant. Yes, I still cringe and learned my lesson.

The second I was talking with a very large woman I was friendly with after a glass in grad school. I can't remember what the topic was but I made a fat comment about something, totally losing sight of the fact that she was. She gave me a look and then I realized. It was cringe worthy but I didn't really see her after that.
