Eaton or Mundo Verde for PK - 4?

Leaning toward MV, for Spanish immersion plus expeditionary learning, but a little discouraged by somewhat undesirable playground... Eaton is obviously well established and has great facilities...

Which one would you choose and why?

Foreign language is not a priority for us, so I would go with Eaton. The track record is there, the facilities are there, the funding is there. Charters have made amazing strides and I know they offer fabulous things, but each open house I attend leaves me feeling like charters are bush-league compared to well-performing, well-established DCPS schools. But to each his own.

a playground is short-term
think long-term

Op here. Playground concern has to do with safety...

What does short term mean in this instance? Are the slated to have a good playground within the year? If so, fine then. If the answer is unknown I'd say the playground issue has some legs. Your child's elementary years are also short term and each of those handful of years are important. Our family places a high value on quality outdoor recess time. The large, grass-surrounded playground at our child's school is the social center of the school. It figures prominently and shouldn't be dismissed.

For preK the playground is a big deal. Most pre-k programs have lots of playground time as part of the curriculum. Eaton has a nice modernized, clean and safe playground. They also have the option to go over to Macomb recreation center when the big kids are testing or repair work is being done on the facilities. Macomb is very well maintained and kept clean. My best guess is that MV plans on using the playground across 16th street next year. That is not a nice playground even through they recently renovated it. It is often littered with broken glass and empties.

You may want to visit both schools, plus the Lamont Street playground and do a final gut check.

Believe it or not, learning classic romance languages will help your DC speak, spell, read, and write better than if they study English alone...
Not to menino it will do wonders for their (English) vocabulary.

Actually, the plan is to 1) clean up the playground across the street at 16th st in partnership with Creative Minds, 2) develop a playground behind the building and 3) use other playgrounds nearby, e.g. Meridian and Girard Parks

What's the timeframe for developing a playground behind the building and is there funding in place for that?

I think KaBOOM is the same grant EL Haynes received, right? I hope they do a better job for MV. They built it in a weekend with seemingly no upkeep funding. At this point the Haynes PG is a dust pit.

Re. Girard St. Park - it is nicer than the one across the street from the new MV location, but it has its own issues. I don't always feel safe with my daughter there -- other kids unsupervised with little concern for safety of the little ones. Perhaps during the school day it is better.

I'd pick Eaton, no question, but like a pp said, after much soul searching, we've decided bilingual is not top priority for us. And the Chinese exposure at Eaton (while not bilingual) and other cultural awareness activities really appeal to us.

Eaton feeds into Deal.
