anyone use these for intermittent use (14 days before period). If so, which one? I need to do something about my mood swings and nothing natural seems to help. I have read that these can but I don't want to gain weight trying to get my mood better. thanks for any input
SSRIs and other antidepressants generally need to be taken for several weeks in order to be fully effective, at least in the case of major depression. I'm not familiar with the literature on use for PMS (which has another name in the DSM). You've tried St. John's Wort? 5-HTP? Exercise and sunlight (or a light box)?

I am not depressed, I just get really bad mood swings about 2 weeks in to my cycle. I have read that SSRI's taken just two weeks prior to period can help alot. I have not tried St Johns, does it really work. Maybe I will give it a try. thanks for your input

When I was put on Zoloft, I read in the literature that it was also used for PMS as well. My PMS was always so bad, but it started the day of my period. It was so predictable, that DH said he knew I was pregnant because I didn't wake up (on the day my period was due) in a bad mood. He was right too.
I took prozac for PMS when I was a teenager. My parents said it helped, but I was so pissed off at them for making me take it that I don't have any positive memories of the episode. But that's my baggage...
Anyway, it was a daily dose, not an intermittent dose like you're referring to. No experience there. |
Cutting salt out of my diet when I got PMS really helped.
Has anyone here tried St John's Wort? Did it work?
