Public Pre-K in Rockville, MD?

Anonymous
Dear Mommies and Daddies,

We have a 1 y. 4 m. old daughter who is cared for by her Daddy who works from home. We are starting to think about public pre-k for her. Is there such a thing in Montgomery County? Any advice is welcome!

Thank you!

There are programs for 4 year olds, but they are income based.

There are other programs in MCPS where the income does not have to be as limited as Head Start. I would call the MCPS office and ask about the programs and get requirements for those other programs to see if you qualify, or otherwise, start saving your money for private preschool.

If you child is just over a year, I think you are thinking about daycare right? At what age? There are lower cost programs and you might qualify for some assistance.

No, we are thinking ahead-maybe 2-3 years from now, not for right now.

I will call MCPS, thank you!

If cost is a factor, I know there is a pre-K program at Wootton HS.

That is for Montgomery County, Pennsylvania.

To qualify for an MCPS pre K program, you would have to first qualify for free lunch by meeting severe income requirements. For a family of 3, it's currently under $35,000. You could also qualify if your child has a disability and needs special services. Here's the information for Head Start/Pre K in MoCo:

When does kindergarten start? Is it free? Do you have to meet income requirements, too?

How do you live on $35,000 in MoCo?..

Kindergarten is free, starting at age 5.

there is free pre-k called title-1 prek, call the school board and see if you qualify. Certain schools have it. The threshold for income is higher than headstart.

This is the same that was linked above. $35,000 for a family of 3. The Head Start income is even less than that.

Some high schools in MCPS have preschools where high school students learn to be teachers. I don't know about Rockville, but BCC has one.
