strange thinning patch on scalp

Anonymous
I am a little nervous about this. About a month ago, I noticed a small spot just beyond my hairline, right above my forehead, which seemed bare. It's tiny - the size of a pea, maybe - but suddenly there are definitely fewer follicles there than anywhere else on my head. It also seems that this little patch is a little pinkish, whereas the rest of my scalp is very white -- but this may be because the thinness that has suddenly developed in this area means that the sun has been hitting it more over the past month. I don't know. I have always had really great thick, dark hair, and it's been one of my favorite things about my appearance - so I am pretty nervous about this little patch and why it has suddenly appeared, and what it might be. It probably isn't noticeable to anyone else, but it's very noticeable to me, especially since I have dark hair. I am in my mid-30s, and very healthy otherwise. Has anyone experienced this, and/or have any thoughts? Thank you in advance.

I had about a quarter size patch once. I think it was called alopecia? My dr said it was stress related. It went away and has never returned. I'd go to the dr to get it checked out.

I was also going to say perhaps alopecia. Does alopecia run in your family? Have a derm take a look.

maybe ringworm

I have really thick hair too and I get bald spots when I pull it back too much. I actually cut it short a couple of years ago because it was thinning on the top right side of my forehead. I am now growing out again but I know that the bald spot will come back if I pull it back too much. It's from the weight of my think hair.

My hair has always been my favorite part of my appearance. It took me a long time to realize it's just hair and it's not the most important thing about me. I have so much more to offer than my think wavy hair and I don't mean my beautiful full lips either. I am a good, caring, loving person and that's what everyone, who is important to me, sees and comments on.

Have it checked. I had one and dermatologist took a sample to do a biopsy for some kind of cancer but, thankfully, results were negative. It could also be psoriasis or seborrheric scalp condition. I just started using a different part to cover up bald spot.

I had this after my first was born. In my case it was alopecia areata brought on by hyperthyroidism. Get thee to a GP or endocrinologist and a dermatologist.

I was going to suggest the dermatologist too. Another thing to consider, are you taking any medication? I had noticed hair on my pillow all of a sudden. Mine was overall, no noticeable patches. I went to the doc, had my thyroid checked, it was normal. In the end, we surmised that my BP medication was a possible cause. I switched medication, and started using Nioxin shampoo and taking biotin suppements. I have noticed a remarkable difference in a few weeks, at least I am not seeing any more hair loss. Once you find the cause, try the Nioxin and biotin, they have helped me...or at least I feel I am doing something to regrow the hair!

Can you tell me which BP medication? I am on meds for BP, and I have developed a bald spot.

OP here. Just wanted to update. Saw a dermatologist, and it is slopecia areata, as some PPs suggested. The dermatologist gave me a corticosteroid shot at the site to help the hair grow back.
