Which general area to stay in Barcelona?

Someplace safe, central, walkable and lively. Any ideas?

Gothic quarter near Las Ramblas. Everything you list except not lively at night.

El Born?

Well, I booked it already. The hotel is in Citat Vellia (sp?) - old city.

Thanks!

Now I'm looking for a hotel in Nice - something reasonably priced. I'm relying a lot on tripadvisor, but I find it strange that people give so great reviews freely. I mean, hotels that look 2 or 3 stars at best, get all these rave reviews and then the prices go up accordingly....

I rely a lot on tripsdvisor, too, but I've heard that a lot of online hotel reviews are fake-- ie written by people affiliated with the hotel.

Op again - do you know what I have started doing pp? If it is a pace I'm strongly considering,, I click on the "poor" reviews to see what people who did not like it have to say about it... Why they did not like it. If it is something I could live with, something I don't care about I go ahead. However, this has really helped me to Eliminate some places.

Also, some places have these raving reviews but are "only" a B&B and are priced as a 4 star hotel. I refuse to get in the hype....

PP here. Yes, we look at the one star reviews, too. If they just thought the rooms were too small or something, no big deal. Some complaints would make me reconsider. But we've had good luck using tripadvisor to research hotels for two trips to
Europe.

We just returned from a great week in Barcelona with our two kids and my mom...everyone had a fabulous time! We stayed in an apartment in the Born District and it was the perfect location. If you are going during the summer months, it might also be fun to consider staying down by the water, Barceloneta to be close to the beach. We have traveled a lot in Europe with out kids and have to say that Barcelona was is really one of the best places to visit with kids...good food, lots of family friendly activities, interesting history/culture, vibrant, and fun. Have a good time!
