international travel with passport and ticket in maiden name?

Anonymous
I have a trip coming up in 4 weeks and just realized my passport is still in my maiden name.

Is there any reason I can't just book my ticket in my maiden name as well and be good to go? The official passport site says not too, but there's conflicting information elsewhere.

I am in the same situation as you so am curious if anyone has a good response. Thanks for posting!

Why not just go to the passport office and get a new passport?

I do it all the time for international flights. I am not a US citizen and because I did not register my marriage in my country's consulate, I can not get a passport with my married name. So, whenever I travel internationally and have to use my passport, I book my flight with my maiden name and it was NEVER a problem. Once though, I forgot and booked a flight within the country (my country) with my married name and I had trouble to check in since they don't accept a driver's license from another country as official document.

Anyway, here in the U.S. I also book as my maiden name, but that is because of my miles rewards program. I could, if I want, book with my married name and use my driver's license as ID.

And I book everyone is together, and never had a problem. When flying internationally, I always carry my child's birth certificate with me (just in case).

Is your license in your married name? Just to be safe I would book the flight in my maiden name (matching the passport) and bring my license and the marriage certificate (make a copy and leave it at home)
I just changed my name on my passport but since I got married more than 2 years ago I had to have proof of my marriage showing my maiden name and my married name

As long as your ticket and the passport match, you should be fine. They should not need to see additional identification (i.e. drivers license) but just in case you might carry a copy of your marriage certificate -- but don't volunteer it unless asked!

The only other issue I can think of is if your credit card is in your married name, and you have difficulty buying a plane ticket in a different name.

ALWAYS book the ticket in the name that is in your valid passport.

Best thing is to get your passport changed. But either way, make sure your ticket matches your passport. When I travel abroad, I never bring my license, but if your credit cards are in your married name and your maiden name is on your passport, you may have problems in your hotel in-country.

Are you saying you have maiden name in passport? I did not change my name after marriage. So i have my license, passport and my greencard all with maiden name. I book all tickets, domestic and international with my maiden name. I show my license as id for domestic flights and passport for international. Never had a problem. DH and DC have the same last name and we fill in only one customs form as we are one family. Never had an issue with that either. From what you wrote, I think you are good to go.

I think you would be fine, but you might run into some problems if the passport is lost or stolen, or something like that. You might want to get down to the passport office today to see if you can change the name in your passport. I did mine through the mail and it took 2.5 weeks total. They should be able to rush it for you.

The best thing (short of getting your passport amended in time) to do is to book it in your current (married) name, bring your passport, and bring a copy of your marriage certificate. I had to do this 2x.

You can get your passport amended at the local Passport Office in a few hours. if your trip is coming up, you can book an appointment online using the passport website. The amendment is just a little note in the book itself. They don't reissue until it expires, at least they didn't for me. The whole process was pretty easy.

What does your driver's license say? Sometimes they ask for your license as well.
