What would you wear to London in July? Sweater weather?

What type of clothing would you pack?

Layers.

Yes, it's cooler and more pleasant outdoors than it is here. Still warm, but light cotton sweaters over lighter layers could sometimes be appropriate.

On the other hand, the Underground gets really hot, and public buildings aren't necessarily air conditioned. Places like department stores that don't have a lot of windows to be opened can get stuffy, too.

Just adding... I'm jealous!

layers and a rain coat

That's crazy. I've been several times in the summer and it was sweltering, and many places (including the underground) do not have a/c.

I lived there for a summer a few years ago and it was sweltering and barely rained! The underground had no a/c and would often get stuck due to issues with the heat. Bring stuff to layer (some of the buildings were frigid) but I'd say you should prepare for heat. Also totally jealous, those were some of the best 3 months of my life!

Pack something fugly to match the locals inside and out.

Yes it can be--but it can also have a day or two of rainy chill. But PP is right, no one will have ac and it can feel like Bangkok or DC bit without ac, or ice cubes. Worst month to go really. But that when the Olympics are, isn't it? Or is it August?

Summer Olympics July 27th - Aug 13th.

I'm guessing you haven't been there recently, right?

Yes, layers are best. And a light jacket. If you feel the cold you might need a sweater for the evenings. London in July can be hot and sunny, hot, cloudy and humid, cool and rainy, and just about any other combination of conditions you can think of. Except for snow.

I think rainfall in London in July is lower than in DC so you will probably not need a raincoat, although I'd take a small umbrella or just buy a cheap one when you get there if you need it.

Agree with the sweltering posters. I've been several times in the summer and it definitely wasn't sweater weather. You probably want a sweater for evenings though.
