| I just overheard a woman in the elevator say she commutes everyday from Baltimore. Our office is in Tysons! It made me wonder, how many DCUMs have monster commutes? and if you do, is it a temporary thing or something you've been doing for a while? |
| I have what many DCUMers would consider a massive commute (Gaithersburg to DC), but what shocks me is all of the people who I see lined up at Shady Grove metro waiting to catch the bus to Hagerstown in the evening. And while maybe some of them work right at Shady Grove, I imagine plenty of them are taking the bus to Shady Grove and taking Metro further in, either to Bethesda or DC. That is a crazy commute. Of course, other people might think that 45-50 minutes on Metro (which is what I do daily) is crazy. I don't mind it, I read a lot of books and sometimes take a nap. I've been doing it for close to 20 years. |
| I have a friend in Warrenton whose DH commutes everyday to the Pentagon. I think that qualifies as a monster. |
| 1.5 hours each way door to door, most of that is on the MARC. Three years ago it was 97 miles door to door driving |
| Office in DC, multiple people in my office commute in from Leesburg. |
|
Office in DC - several come in from Fredericksburg and Stafford.
My DH has a receptionist at his Falls Church office who takes the bus from Richmond every day. |
| Columbia, MD to Springfield, VA. Yup. As bad as it sounds. |
|
I once worked in Bethesda with a guy who commuted from Hanover, PA!! 2.5 hrs each way...EVERYDAY!
I currently work in DC with a guy who commutes from Emmitsburg, MD daily. Pretty nuts! |
| I used to commute from Springfield, VA to Bethesda, MD M-F for 4 years (96-00). It was a solid hour one way on a good day. On Fridays, forget about it. Always took about 2 hours. Then I got an easier commute (Germantown to Bethesda) - not too bad 20 minutes on a good day (01-04). Then moved to frederick, made the commute from Frederick to Bethesda M-F for 6 years. It was terrible and getting worse every year. Actually the stinky commutes didnt bug me too much until we had DD. Finally I found a job at Ft. Detrick 2 years ago. Now I have a 5 minute commute. I'm freaking loving it. |
| At my old firm there were a couple of admin people that commuted in from W. Virginia. I am not kidding. |
| Work in Dupont and coworker commutes from Bel Air, MD. Other side of Baltimore. |
| DH and I lived with my parents in Woodbridge for a month and I commuted to McLean. That was 1.25 hrs on a good day, on Fridays could be 2... |

You see a lot of monster commutes at the Pentagon. I know someone who commutes from Front Royal and a couple from Warrenton or further out- those tend to be folks closer to retirement who have already bought the farm they plan to retire.
Have known several that commute from West Virginia - those tend to be young enlisted men who can't afford to live in this area. |
Wouldn't the cost of such an extensive commute eat up most of the money you'd save living that far out? Like the admin who rides the bus from Richmond... how much can she possibly make to make that commute worthwhile? There's no admin jobs in Richmond? |

I work with a woman that commutes everyday from Gettysburg, PA to Arlington, VA.
I don't know how she does it! |
