help me plan my 40th-- Margarita/mexican party

Anonymous
I'm helping my husband with some ideas for my 40th bday party this summer.. we want to do a very casual late afternoon into the evening pool party... and I love margaritas and mexican food, so we'll find a caterer for the food. But I want there to be something special that sets it apart from just a pool party with mexican food. Something like -- a chef doing some sort of food demonstration for the crowd? a bartender who is mixing up 5 different types of margaritas? Something along the lines of a knowlegable person doing a tequila tasting for the guests would be the PERFECT idea, except tequila is such a strong flavor I don't see many people (including me) getting really into that. But that's the kind of idea I'm searching for, something that is sort of the "entertainment" for the party. Any ideas? Thanks!!

BTW -- any suggestions for mexican food catering in the arlington/mclean area?

Thanks!

Hire a cigar roller or a mariachi band

Hire the "Margarita Man." I think thats the comapany name...they deliver frozen margarita machines in different flavors with little cups and things. Its AWESOME! You can get regular, sangria, I think they do frozen daquiris. YUM!

We have had Rio Grande (Uncle Julios) cater mexican food and it was really good.

I did a party catered by the Tortilla Factory (because Rio Grande was already fully booked the day I wanted) and they did a really nice job. They also did the frozen margarita machine, which was a big hit. I had to buy all the alcohol separately (maybe because I am in MoCo with its crazy distributor rules) but that probably saved money.

Love the idea of a cigar roller and mariachi. Those frozen marg machines tend to be watered down and sub-par, or am I wrong? Maybe hire a professional bartender and have him make a few "signature drinks" like a pomegranate or lavendar margarita, mojito (I know- not Mexican, but South American and you can use vodka vs tequila for those of us who aren't tequila people), a few upscale sipping tequilas etc. Decorate with fun, festive Mexican colors and flowers. The succulent is HUGE right now -our friend who was just married in Mexico used them for the dinner table and they were gorgeous. Mixed with roses, it gave an elegant Mexican feel.

For catering, maybe try Jose Andres Catering (they own Oyamel).

Those drinks that come out of slushee machines are not margaritas.

Actually they are real margaritas. They are exactly like blender made drinks. Have you been to Rio Grande? Same thing and those are damn good. Maybe you need to get out more often and stop acting like a pretentious ass.

And also, you pour in the mix and the alcohol so no they are not watered down like the other pp said.

If you're using a mix it's not a real margarita either.

16:43, why don't you contribute an idea and stop picking apart other people's?

The OP can decide if she wants frozen margaritas or not.

OP, I was going to suggest a pinata.

16:43 is just being an ass. Get a life and like pp said...why dont you contribute something rather than picking a fight on a thread about planning a Bday party.

We can call them tequila slurpees if that makes you feel better. They are damn good on a hot summer day and partygoers enjoy them. And the ones we did with the Tortilla Factory were mighty strong. Mmmm...I am thirsting for one now.

Unless you know your crowd really well, I'd skip cigars. I know a lot of people who would want to leave if the cigar smoke started up.

LOVE the pinata idea!

What about a candy bar, but in addition to candy get some really big glass hurricanes or vases and instead of filling those with candy fill them with tiny tequila bottles or other liquors (airplane sized). So, an "adult" candy bar!
