Bruce Coville, "The Dragon of Doom"--it's a level 3 book so might be beyond his reading level, but it gets great reviews on Amazon for kids this age as a read-aloud.

We use ro read our son (5.11 years old) from the Book of Collection like Andersen's Fairy Tales, or "Die schönsten Märchen" (Vilhelm Hauff, Hans Christian Anderssen, Brothers Grimm).
