| My husband and I play tug of war with this topic all the time. I'm of the opinion that real sugar is better for the body than sugar free chemicals. He feels differently. What do you do? |
| Absolutely not. Eating sugar occasionally is fine. You don'twant sugary crap to displace too much healthy food, and "sugar free" foods have the same effect. |
| Sugar free foods with chemicals like saccharin are the worst. I would never intentionally feed my kids that crap. |
|
Well, the fake stuff tastes weird/gross to me. I don't think they are a good idea b/c they can lead to weight gain:
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/livestrongcom/dangers-of-artificial-swe_b_710801.html Sweet foods in general do this, so I think it's important to eat a balance of foods in any case. |
| yup we do, its healthier and prevents obesity. again retard paranoia crew above. |
| 16 calories in a teaspoon of sugar, so adding a couple of teaspoons seems preferable to ingesting carcinogens. the sugar problem is more about products that have excess sugar. |
|
No chemicals in our food.
Limited sugar too. |

My teenager has a problem controlling his weight, and I let him have a diet soda once a day at home and if we go out.
I figure it's the lesser of two evils. He drinks skim milk and water too but he needs a treat every now and then, and needs to feel like he fits in. This strategy, along with a few other things, has helped him get his weight under control and he's doing really well in that regard, so I don't feel bad about it. |

I wouldn't feed my kids fake junk.
If sugar is going to be eaten, it should be real. And it should be limited. |
| My husband feels that so many of these artificial sweeteners are new that no one knows the effect they will have on a body 80 years from now when we hope our children will still be going strong. I am amazed though how hard it has gotten to be to avoid them. Stevia in Girl Scout cookies..sucralose in the bread... |
interesting but does your husband have any scientific basis for this idea? is he a nutritionist or biologist? |
Not the PP, but even if he doesn't, I don't see how that changes his point. The chemicals are new, so even if popular opinion is that they're okay, their true effects (whether benign or harmful) over the long-term won't be able to seen until time has passed. |
| A phd chemist actually... |
| Nope. I stick with the real thing. |
| No. has a bad reaction to artificial sweetners (makes very hyper and aggitated). Equal and sweet and low give me bad headaches (same with my sister). |
