| My husband wants to get me one of these gadgets for my birthday -- they look pretty cool but I can't go up to a store and check one out because they are only available for purchase online. I know they have a return policy, but I wonder if anyone here has one and what they think. Is it really all it's cracked up to be? I have a real issue with reading from a computer screen - although they claim it's different/better. Thoughts? |

I have a Kindle and I really love it. The screen is not backlit and to me seems very clear and crisp. I took it with me on vacation to Mexico with a bunch of books downloaded and it was great to cut down on the bulk. I use it mostly when I travel and it is really easy and fast to download books - either by ordering them on Amazon.com or through the Kindle itself.
I found that it means that I read more as I hated buying books that would take up space when I was done reading them. It is not for those who are fans of keeping lots of paper books but you can get a SD memory card to store your finished books if you want to take them off the device. All and all it was money well spent for me. |
| I had my dad buy one for my mom for Christmas and she LOVES it. This is a woman who loves nothing. She is technologically illiterate and she figured out how to download books on her own. She travels with it and uses it at home. Says it is one of the best presents she ever received. |

Before you buy--it is rumored there will be a new (and presumably improved) Kindle in October--

| OP here: Thanks everyone for all the comments. I'll keep checking back in case anyone has more. Thanks for the tip on the possible 2.0 version too. That sounds plausable and I've read a few complaints (including ergonomics/placement of page turn keys) that could be improved with a next generation. Hmmm.... |
